GAIL GOSLEIGH PU)RCHASING AGENT By Debbie LuchuL Sixty children are being entertained in a program run by the Durhamn Association for Family Respite Services this summer. With the assistance of a federal grant, the prograni, called Fun Fest, is for handicapped children to enjoy a few outings over the summer while giving their caregivers or parents some tâme to themselves, to spend with other offspring or just to provide a feW days when working parents would not have to worry about finding day care for their child. The prograni is run by two students with the supervision of full time respite services staff. Each of the summer employees has a group of 30 children for whom they are responsible. On each outing, one child from each of these groups is selected to go, so that' there is" one on one" attention. Children enrolled in the prograni undergo interview£- (with their parents present) te determine what their interests are, what their disabilities are and what their home situation is like. The tower of this yellow claphoard house is a landmark on Brock St. just N of Highway 401. Buiît in 1904, it is the finest in a row of five estate homes still standing. Jackson who was active in local polities cied of tyhoid fever at the age of only 39, just two years after this house was buit. Behind the house is the original drive shed and a section of original fencing*. t*Local ArchitecurlConservation Advisory Committee l i7DDD DURHAM MM Each participant in the program goes on two or more outings throughout the sunimer to such* locations as Cullen Gardens, Canada's Wonderland, the Ontario Science Centre and the Toronto Zoo. Ainong other activities, a camping weekendhas been planned. This is the second summer in which the prograxn has been run. Katrina Greco and Kelly Knox, of McMaster University and Trent University respectively, have been hired through a federal SEED grant for the summer. Knox and Greco are planning to work with children in their future careers as a speech pathologist and as a teacher. The Durham Association for Family Respite Services is a non-profit organization providing placement of handicapped children with a temporary c&aregiver to give an interval of rest or relief to the primary caregivers. Individuals who have been screened and trained volunteer through Durham Association for Family Respite Services to share their home for short periods of time with a handicapped child.
