Above a design lie did for a John Steinbeck book Artist does Hardy Boys book covers By Debbie Luchuk The generations beloved Hardy Boys books, written by local autbor Leslie McFarlane, are being given a visual "face lift" with new covers designed by an Englisb artist. Freelance illustrator Kenny McKendry, 24, of Brighton, England, is responsible for the new cover art, and is currently visiting witb relatives in Whitby. Ne has been working only two years since graduating from an art college in Brigbton, having taken illustration. I have always bad an interest in art, as long as I can re- member," McKendry said. The covers, posters and labels, commercial art work that McKendry creates is secured by an agent, wbo is paid 30 percent of bis earnings on each job. "I'm paid a set fee for this work. I get about 450 quid for each cover." I have done covers for Hardy Boys books, Jobn Steinbeck, whiskey labels, ads for sherry, posters for museums... it's work rigbt now. Once you start doing it for a living, it isn't much fun with deadlines and ail that," Mc Kendry said. However, he did add that if he didn't like art, he wouldn't be creating commercial artwork for a living. McKendry said he couldn't imagine doing anything else for a living, even though the pay is not very good. He bas neyer read the Hardy Boys books, but was issued a brief outline of the books before he designed the covers. When asked wbat he planned to do in the future, McKendry said, I want to keep doing what I'm doing, maybe get into film posters (they make better money)." "Teaching illustration is a possibility, but I bave te have more experience in freelancing, maybe two years more." On this his first trip to Canada, McKendry was amazed by the wealth of people bis own age, by the cars and homes they own, and by their income. "The quality of living for people my age here is good," he said. Wýhitby, "the home of the Hardy Boys", McKendry greatly enjoyed. "It's really, really different here. It's been really good, people are really friendly. I can't get over bow dlean it is. Everything scems so big andt enthusiaticaUly. bright," he The twenty odd Hardy ToÎALA REPRODUCTIONS INC-, said books were written by McFarlane under the pen name of Franklin W.
