WHITBY FREE PRESS, Mann Cup Special, SEP>TEMBER 7,1988, PAGE A3 ]Redmen eager to face new western opponaent Brooklin Redmen coach Peter Vipond is happy with his team's preparations for the Mann Cup and is waiting aniously for the series to get underway. "We are ready for Coquitiain. They have a fast teani, and they are not ail that sinaîl, but we are ready," says Vipond. Coquitiam. Adanacs defeated New Westminster Salmonbellies to advance to' the Mann Cup while Redmen defeated Peter- borough. But while Redmen needed only four gaines to oust Peterborough in the best-of-seven final, Coquitlam needed ail seven gaines to defeat New West- minster. Leading 3-1, Coquitiani iost the next two gaines and had to retumn to New Westminster for the deciding seventh gaine. They won 9-6. 'When Coquitlain was up 3-1, 1 thought we would be -piaying thein. But then New Westminster came back. It shows Coquitiani must be a good teain," says Vipond, no stranger to dramatxc finishes. In the 1985 Mann Cup hosted by New Westminster, the home teain was ahead 3-0 in the series before Redmen won the next four gaines to capture the cup. In 1986, Redmen hosted the Mann Cup, eventualiy iosing to New Westminster. Redmen re- turned to New Westminster in 1987 to win the cup. Vipond says there is a bit of added pressure on Redmen as champions. He aiso admits there is added pressure for the teain to win'the championship before the home fans. I don't know what it is, hopefuily we will win it this year," says Vipond, who wili be relying on teain defence in the series. 'We can't have anyone go to sieep. We have to control the Ioose balis and win the face-offs." He* says veteran netininder Wayne Colley, who appeared in 13 gaines this year, will start in net for Redmen. 'Wayne will have to be good," says Vipond, aiso counting on offensive threats Derek Keenan, the teains leading scorer, Jin Meredith, last year's Mann Cup MVP, Gil Nieuwendyk and- John Fusco to each have a good series. Redmen players are eager and waiting to face Coquitiain for the Mann Cup, according to two of Brookin's flrst year players. "We basicaily know nothing about thein, but we are ready," says 24-year-oid Terry Bullen. Bullen, who was a member of the Whitby Warriors when they won the Minto Cup in 1985. was going to take a year off froin lacrosse when he received a call froin the' Redmen organization asking hum to play this year. "t would be nice to win both a Minto and Mann Cup champ- ionship," says Bulien, adding that many of the players are* looking forward to playing a teain other than New Westminster Salmonbellies in the Mann Cup final. Brooklin bas met New West in the past three Mann Cups, winning two and losing one. "Our practices have been second to none. We are ready,"- says Bullen. The Mann Cup is just another series of gaines for rookie Scott McMichael. The 21-year-oid says the teai is ready for Coquitlain. In practices, he says members of the Redmen have been quick on their feet and are iooking forward to playing Coquitlain. "We know that they're fast and young, and that they're a big teain," says Derek Keenan,. Redmen's top scorer, about Coquitlain. Keenan says that while western teains stress physical,- defensive play to slow down a gaine, scouting reports suggest that Coquitiain differs, with a preference for a fast-pacéed gaine speed and fast breaks - much like the Redmen attack. "t will be really exciting," predicts Keenan. Keenan and Gil Nieuwendyk, Redmen's two biggeit offensive threats, were effectively held down by New Wesminster's close checking in last year's Mann Cup final, a close, hard-fought series. Keenan says that checking m-ight again be evident in the series against Coquitlain. But he notes that this year's Rednien lineup bas much more offensive depth, so that if he and Nieuwendyk are again marked, "Lt opens things up for the other guys. ."We have a deep bench and a lot of guys who can score," he says. Redmen also picked up Jinf Meredith froin Huntsville for the Ontario piayoffs, and the clever scorer.and piaymaker - nanied most valuable player in the Mann Cup last year - proves invaluable on Redmen's strength, the attack with a man advantage. I's a big part of our garie," says Keenan. "And he (Meredlith) is great on the power play." Keenan, for one, is giad to be facing a western team other than New West. But he adds that the home arena advantage hasn't been very apparent in recent years, with Redmen winning the Tickets for Mann Cup series Tickets for each game in the Mann Cup series beginrning tonight (Wednesday) at Iroui Park will be $7 for aduits, $5 for seniors and students. An advance package price, for the flrst four gaines of the best-of-seven series, is aiso available at $25 for aduits, $18 for seniors and students. cup. in the west Iast year, and New West winning here the year before. Redmen have been doing a lot of running during workouts, and fine tuning varîous aspects of their gaine. And Keenan says this year's bigger, stronger and deeper Redmen lineup can again win the cup. "We're confident, but more than anything, we're excited."
