The pennant race rewards students who have "winning attitudes." ]Redmeri defend Cup titie Brooklin Rednien last week captured their second- straight Mann Cup and third in four years as they defeated Coquitlam Adan- acs four games to two in the best- of-seven Canadian final. "We played well enough to win," said coach Peter Vipond after Redmen won the sixth game 11-6 before a packed house at Iro- quois Park arena. 'We didn't play as well as we could, but the pressure was on us, said Vipond, noting his teani had previously been unable to win the championship in front of the home crowd. "Our teami didn't play as well as it could'," said Adanacs coach Frank Nielsen, adding that Red- men posed the toughest oppo- sition bis team had faced this season. "Some of our players weren't prepared for this séries ... We gave a good effort but it just wasn't enough." In the sixth and final gante, Redmen took a 5-1 lead after the first period. However, it was then that Vipond says he became "iscared" since his team "-always lets up,", after building a lead. And Adanacs took advantage by scor- ing the first two goals of the second period. But a short-handed goal by Kevin VanSickle, credited by Vip- ond for "scoring a lot of big goals for us in the series," again turned the gaine in favor of Redmen who took a 7-4 lead into the final per- ibd. VanSickle and Jim Meredith each scored two goals for Red- men. Gil Nieuwendyk, Tom Wreggitt, John Dark, John Fusco, Blaine Harrison and Andy Per- roni had singles. Nieuwendyk led the Redmen in scoring in the series with seven goals and 12 assists while Van- Sicle was second with seven goals and eight goals. Dale Rezansoif scored three goals for Coquitlam while Jody Twa added two. Former Redmen Paul St. John had the other Coquitlam goal. Twa led Adanacs in series scoring with eight goals and six assists. Jim Veltman, former Ontario junior star who was tout- ed as the offensive star for Ad- anacs, was held to only one goal in the six games, although he picked up 10 assists. "Every game we went into some sort of sleeping speli," said Nielsen, adding, however, that bis teain played better as the ser- jes progressed. "Even when we had the lead, we didn't have that killer in- stinct." Nielsen said he was surprised at the number of "cheap shots" dished out by TRedmen on bis players. o "But that's experience," he said. "They have a lot of quality players. And they do what it takes to win." One player who sbined for Adanacs was goalie Bill Thomas, named winner of the Mike Kelly award as outstanding player in the Mann Cup series. "He's the best goalie in the west, even though he's unknown here,"i said Nielsen. "He can't throw the, baIl that well, but he can sure stop it." "He deserved it," said Vipond of MVP award-winner Thomas, describing the goalie as "out- standing." Vipond had high praise for Terry Bullen, whom he also de- scribed as "outstanding," partic- ularly since he played the entire series in pain, with a sôre hip, knee and arm. I didn't even know if he could play. And others were hurting, too. We were banged Up." He also praised the effort of his own goaltender, Waynie Col- ley, in net for most of the gaines. Ted Sawicki took over in the final gaine and had three assists, six overal n the series. Vipond said the new players added to the Rednxen lineup for the 1988 season gave the team more size and strength in prep- aration for an anticipated encounter with New Westmin- ster. But when the smaller, more fleet Adanacs won the west to gain a Mann Cup berth, Vipond said bis team. was able to adapt. "Coquitlam plays like us," said, Vipond, noting the style of game that emphasizes a lot of running and fast breaks. "But we can play it any way. Our kids are in great shape. "We're on the floor four or five times a week," he said, referring SE E PAGCI ~J- '2j E18 9.900 points 41. Lori Strong, 9.600 pointb6 86. Christina MacDonald 9.160 points à
