Composting site will be in Whitby By Debbie Luchuk Durham Region hopes to have its composting operation soon'in place at the Durham Recycling Centre site, on Garrard Rd. in Whitby. The composting operation will process leaves, and other such' biodegradables. Region works committee chairman Gerry Emm said Whitby was chosen as the site for -the project because the town is generously treed, with large amounts of fallen leaves 'every [aIl. Previously the Town would vacuum up:.the leaves in Whitby and take them to another site, but Emm said thevacuumed leaves will now probably be dumped at the recycling site. To further reduce the region's garbage problems, works com- mittee investigated the possibility of using- biodegradable bags for region waste.-, Originally, works staff- said they could only buy the bags from one company. However, Emm said that he had found a cheaper product locally. "The bags (Region's choice) cost 50-cents a bag. Some of my people checked around and found a package of 10 for $1.44 in Woolco. That's 15 cents a bag," Emm said. Staff said the bags were smaller than required, but Emm said, "Maybe we can get them (PCL) to make a bigger'bag at cost.", Works committee will discuss the composting project further at today's (Wednesday) regional council meeting.
