Brophey, president of the Ontario Chamber or Com- merce, will be guest speaker at the 60th anniversary banquet of the Whitby Chamber of Com- merce, Oct. 25. Brophey will speak on '"The Agenda of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, which represents. nearly 160 Chambers of Com- merce throughout Ontario, in making representation to the pro- vincial government. The 60th anniversary ban- quest will be held upstairs at the Garden Gate Restaurant, Cullen Gardens, with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. A special feature of the ban- quet will be the presentation of the Business Person and Student of the Year Awards by the Whit- by Chamber of Commerce. The price of the meal is $21. Anyone wishing to attend is ask- ed to phone the Whitby Chamber of commerce at 668-4506, before Oct. 17 to reserve a place. The Whitby Chamber of Com- merce was founded in the sum- mer of 1928, after the old Board of Trade was revived. Brophey, who has been a member of the board of directors of the Ontario Chamber since 1982, became a member of the executive council in 1987, serving as chairman of the prominent Canada/U.S. trade committee. He is a past president of the Institute for Political Involve- ment; vice-chairman of radio sta- tion CJRT-FM, Toronto; director and past chairman of the Insti- tute for'Donations and Public Re- search, director and past presi- dent of the Canadian Business, Equipment Manufacturers' As- sociation and past vice-president of community relations, United Way of Metropolitan Toronto. Brophey joined Xerox Canada in 1970 as chief financial officer and was appointed as a director of the company in 1974. The home is located on the northwest corner of Garden St. and Manning Rd. James Flaherty had applied for rezoning of the.lot to allow a law office. The planning department made seven requirements. of Flaherty including the dedication of three metres of land on Garden St. Other requirements include: Flaherty preparing a landscape plan; providing the Town with five large scale drawings of the site; and Flaherty responsible for all legal fees. But Flaherty contered that he is not developing the land. "I object to all the conditions of the planning department. This is not a development plan, we are preserving a building," said Flaherty. Councillor Ross Batten told Flaherty that he was not convinced that a home occupation should be on the property. "It should not *be there," said Batten, adding that he thought the planning department's requ- irements were reasonable. Councillor Joe Drumm asked Flaherty to meet with planning director Bob Short within the next two weeks to see if an agreement can be reached on the conditions.
