OCTOBER 19, 1988 New models of P orsch.e in 25th anniversa*ry year 1This is the 25th anniversary of the Porsche 911 and a number of new ,models will enhance the product range. The transaxle Porsches have been streamlined for 1989 with the retiremient of the 924S .which introduced the four-cylinder era in 1974 as the Porsche 924. In 1989,' the 944 has an inceeased dispiacement of 2.7 from 2.5 litres and torque fromi the previous 210 Nm at 4500 rpm to 225 Nm at 4200 rpm, a notable gain. Power potential of 160 hp rises to 165 hp resulting in much improved acceleration. In addition, new digital engipe electronics, higher compression, enlarged intake ývalves and new camshafts with altered timing are technical improvements for 1989. Along with new exterior and interior colors the 944 features ABS, a stronger battery, automatic heater regulation, and passenger seat with electric height adjustment as standard equipment. Modifications to the Porsche 944 S2 are substantial. The displacement has been increased from theprevious 2.5 litres to 3.0 *and a performance increase from 190 to 204 hp. The 944 S2 * receives the complete chassis as well as the body of the 944 Turbo. Top speed is 240 km/h and 0-100 km takes only 6.9 seconds. In 1989, the 944 Turbo has been developed from the 944 race car. The 2.5- litre 250-hp, 260-km/h vehicle ranks at the top of the sports car class. It covers 0-100 km in only 5.7 seconds.' A performance increase, compared with the previous 944 Turbo, from 220 hp to 250 hp is achieved with a larger turbo- charger, higher boost pressure and reworlked digital engine electronics.. This powerful engine has a maximum, torque of 350 Nm at only 4000 rpm. The gearbox has been strengthened,- an external. oil cooler and standard limitedý slip differential added. In front there are 7J x 16 rims fltted with 255/50 tires, in the rear 9J trims with 245/45 ZR tires. Standard equipment also includes wider forged wheels, ABS, air conditioning, electronically ad- justable seats, an alarm systemn and stronger battery. The 944 -S2 Cabriolet will be produced with identical equipment and technology to the Porsche 944 S2. The Porsche 928 S4 with its five liter, four valve power plant and output of 320 hp (with catalytic converter) has a top speed of 270 km/h. The 'fastest and most powerful production Porsche has two special features-a tire pressure control systemn, developed directly from years of racing experience. It automatically informs the driver about every change in the pressure of his four tires. Also a newly developed diagnostic sys- tem provides reliable information on tuhe current condition of the most important vehicle. com- ponents at all tiMes. Twenty-flve years later the six-cylinder, rear engine Porsche with 3.2-liter displacement has an output of 231 hp. The 911 Carrera 4 will have front tires 6J1 x 16 for 205/55 and wider rear rims -with 8J x 16 for 255/50 tires resulting in further handling improvement. The Porsche 911 Speedster, based on the Carrera,' celebrates a rebirth recalling mzemories of thé years between 1954 and 1958 when, in the form of a 356, it became a particularjy popular sports car. The Speedster will be offered with a Turbo body,, with wide fenders and wheels, but not the rear spoiler. Production, which begins this fail, will hé limited to 300 units. Compared with the Cabriolet, the 70 kilo lighter Speedster, conceived as a pure two-seater, features an unlined, folding top which disappears entirely beneath a specially made plastic cover, when open. The windshield, framed in aluminum and dismountable with onboard tools, is five degrees flatter than a standard car with its top set somewhat lower as well. The 1989 911 Turbo gets one of the' most important changes in its history, which dates back to 1974. A five-speed gearbox replaces the peiu four-speed box and hyralc clutch operation has been introduced. The flve-speed gearbox enables the turbocharger- to build pressure1 more quickly allowing more agile acceleration..The new hydraulic clutch reduces opera- ting forces for the driver. The suspension has been retuned and the most important chassis changes include, torsion bars with a larger diameter at the rear axle, altered anti-roîl bar and somewhat firmer shock absorbers. The result is lesa pitch under braking or acceleration with even more neutral cornering behavior. The 911, Turbo, available as a Coupe, Targa or Cabriolet also features a new alarmi systemn as standard equipment. Once the door is locked this. unit is automatically activated elimin- ating the need for a second key. The brake pads, clutch plate, engine and gearbox seals are al asbestos free.
