Van Gils, Clancy art at library By Feroneh Neil Duringovember, the works af two Witby artists, waterco- lors by Peter Van Gils and pen and ink drawings by -Desmond Clancy, will be featured in the Whitby Public 'Library' audi- torium. Van Gils was born in Holland where he had his first basic art trainin in drawing and, composi- tion. Hfe attended the textile col- lege in Tilburg and was later employed as a textile designer. He came to Canada in 1957 and was soon busy painting the Canadian landscape. He studied with Jack Pollock and began monoprinting. After 25 years of working in oils and printmaking, he recently changed to trans- parent watercolors. I decided te try watercolors because I. needed a new challenge," says Van Gils. It is different, and it is harder than oils. If you make a mistake* with ois te you can always'scrape that with watercolors." Desniond Clancy was born in Dublin,' Ireland and came to Canada as a young boy. Hlis èducation was in Quebec and at Queens University. He later attended the Three Schools of Art in Toronto as well as the Ontario College of Art where he took communications and design. "I find black and white fascinating," Clancy says. "So many people do colors that it makes it ordinary. Black and white makes things challenging. With this show, we want people to be more aware of the beauty of their town, generate more interestin it." PETER VANGIZLS, shown with one of his works (at top), and Desmond Clancy will have a preview at the" Whitby Public Library on Friday,,Nov. 4, 8 p.m., of Whitby of Old,"' their show of paintings and draw- ings.
