Present Tlis Coupon and Reoeive IL The Town of Whitby will have to provide apaking lot at the Daginar Ulraifg stop along the HaeokPtroog-oot rail line or VIA will eliminate the stop, council has learned. The Town bas. complained to VIA about commutera who use the stop, parking their cars on the aide of the road.-Th~e parking is a nuisance to residents in the area and causes problems for the Town when they have to remove snow around -the cars. The Town asked VIA te construct a parking lot to solve the problem. VIA, however, has informed the Town it is not going te provide the parking lot. "There are no funds for parking. It would not be cost efficient for VIA," Richard Gauthier, a representative of VIA, told operations con mttee niembers last Tuesday. H emsaid an aege of four people (two going to Toronto and two return- ing from Toronto) use the stop per day. He advised committee that the stops at Myrtle, five kilometers east of Dagmar, and Claremont, 10 kilometers west of Dagmnar, both have proper parking facili- ties. "The two usera would not be overly inconvenienced," said Gauthier. But John Lennox of Ashburn told committee there are often il people using the train. And» a letter- fromn Mayor Bob Attersley to VIA, requesting that the stop rernain, stated 1,628 people used the stop in 1987. Gauthier said VIA would retain the stop if the Town constructed the parking lot. Comnittee decided to have staff look at the situation and respond back. Until the matter is deait with, which is expected to be in January, VIA will continue the stop.
