During council's inugural meeting, voting will take place on committee appointments. All four committees - planning, works, health and social services, and finance and administration will have eight members plus the regional chairman as an ex-officio member. Whitby's four regional representatives - Mayor Bob Attersley, Tom Edwards, Joe Drumm and Marcel Brunelle - have indicated they would like one Whitby member on each committee. That may not be possible, however, according to Attersley. Explaining the voting proce- dure, he noted that committee names are pulled from a hat, followed by names of councillors. A vote is then taken on whether or not that councillor should be a member of that committee. "It would be advantageous for Whitby councillors to be on each committee but it might not happen, we could have two councillors on the same commit- tee." Attersley has indicated he would like to sit on the newly formed finance and adminis- trative committee. The finance committee assumed adminstra, tive responsibilities when the management committee, compri- sed of the region's eight mayors and regional chairman Gary Herrema, was disbanded. Attersley was opposed to disbanding the management com- mittee. "You had the eight mayors meeting regularily. There were a lot of' issues we talked about," said Attersley who is also seeking his eighth .term on the Durham Police Commission. Attersley has been chairman of the commission, five of those eight years. "I want to keep some continuity on the commission," said Attersley for his decision to seek the office. He noted that fellow regional council member Jerry Taylor did not run in this past election. "We will have one new council member and a new chief of police," said Atteràley who is a major supporter of the Commun- ity Services branch of the force. Attersley wants to see the branch, which deals with neigh- borhood watch programs, crossing guards and Block Parents, continue to be an active part of the police force. "The police contract is also up at the end of this year and the police budget is 48 per cent of the region's total budget," said Attersley who feels his experience will help with negotiations. Councillor Drumm has indicated'he would like to servi on the- planning committee. In his 12 years on Whitby council, he has spent nine years on the administrative committee which deals with planning issues. "I like the challenge of planning. I have to take what I can get but I would prefer planning. Of the two committees at the Town, planning is the more challenging and I have the same perspective of the region," said Drumm, who received the most votes for regional councillor in last month's municipal election. Councillor Tom Edwards has indicated his preference is the health and social services committee. A member of the committee since 1982, he has been vice- chairman for the past three years. "That is where I can do the best good for the Town of Whitby," said Edwards about his decision. The committee handles matters to do with homes for the aged, private and regional day SEE PAGE 19 DURIHAM REGION Committees to be decided today Thank You Ontario Riding Pickering 4th Concession (Taunton) Ajax Whitby I AM HONOURED THAT YOU CHOSE ME AS YOUR MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT ON NOV. 21st.
