Whitby had opened the tournament with a 3-2 wn over Amherst, N.Y. as Mark Haynes scored twice and Darryl Lewis had one. Scott Young setting up two of the goals. Young scored three goals and Haynes two in a 10-0 decision over Kitchener in the second garne. Lewis, Chris Kerr, Paul Gray, Danny Ricica and Jason Irwin had singles. Brian Crouch had three assists with two assists to Haynes, Irwin, Ricica, Young and Gray. Josh Evans and Brian Harrison shared the shutout. Paul Gray, from Andrew Stearns, had Wihitby's only goal against Toronto. The game was described by Whitby coaches as a very disappointing as Whitby, sponsored by Nash Aluminum, totally dominated. In league play, Kerr scored three goals in a 10-1 win over Oshawa LNIIL Canadians on Nov. 24. Crouch scored twice while Vinent, Gray, Crilly and Haynes each scored once. Harrison earned the shutout in a 4-0 triumph over Markham Nov. 28. Harrison stopped a breakaway in the final seconds to preserve his shutout. Jason Hotchkiss, Crouch, Vin- ent and Lewis scored. Sears, Ninacs, Noble win gold Steven Sears and the team of Teri Ninacs and Dale Noble won gold medals for the Whitby Skating Club at the Eastern Ontario sectional championships in Ottawa Nov. 17-20. Fawcett, Schilling lead bantam Bs Greg Fawcett had a five-point game to lead Whitby major bantam Bs to a 5-2 win over Peterborough Nov. 18. Whitbý, sponsored by Peacock Sports, then managed a 2-1 win over Markham on Nov. 23., the flrst win over Markham this season. Cam Schilling and Matt Shearer scored for Witby while' Danny Ladouceur earned top player honors with his fine goaltending for Whitby. In a recent tournament in Fort EMie, VWtby managed three ties to advance to the semi-final where they lost 3-1 to the host team. Whitby was facing elimination in the third game, down 5-1 with only 5:31 remaining. But Cam Schilling scored a natural hat trick to lead a comeback and a tie that put Whitby into the semi-final. Sears won a gold in novice menis competition while Ninacs and Noble won gold in pre-novice dance. Chris McLean and Betty Harbaruk were second in junior dance; Scott O'Neill- second in senior men; Robin Baldwin l6th in junior ladies; Heather Lawler third in her flight, l2th in the final for pre-novice ladies. Noble was flfth in pre-novice men's; Sarah Cook l2th in juvenile ladies. Also representing the Whitby club were Natasha Brideau, Lisa Fernlund and Ninacs, ail in pre-novice ladies; Maria McKin- non, juvenile ladies. Sears, O'Neill, McLean and Harbaruk will compete at the Eastern Canadian championships in Ottawa in January. In March, Sears, Nina cs and Noble will compete in the Winter Games in North Bay. In other recent competition in Cobourg, McKinnon was first in juvenile ladies, Jason Collier third in juvenile mens; Cook fourth in juvenile ladies; Lisa Czarnuk, fifth; Brideau third in flight and fourth overail in pre- novice; Keri Ferguson 8th in junior ladies. Also competing in Cobourg were Ninacs and Fernlund in pre-novice and Michelle Connolly and Melissa Lawrence in pre-preliminary. McPherson rink ends dro.ught with Sun Life titie With a nose hit in the lOth end, Scott McPherson edged Ottawads Rich Bachand 6-5 to take flrst prize in the l4th annual Ontario Sun Life invita- tional curling bonspiel held in Whitby over the weekend. It was McPherson's first win in five tries in WI-itby. I1 can't say I was overly confident coming into this," said McPherson of the Toronto Bay- view Curling Club. We had neyer played hirn before, but we certainly knew bow good of a rink he had after winning the Royals spiel last rnonth in Toronto." The score was tied at 3-3 after five ends, but the two rinks traded points up to the lOth with McPherson holding the hammer. In the second event, Werenich went to town on Oshawa"s Brian Suddard in the middle stages to secure an 8-4 victory. Bob Turcotte of Oshawa was one down coming home, but scored two in the lOth end to surprise Thornhill's Kirk Ziola in the third event. In the fourth qvent, Bill Garobell of Russell had little trouble disposing of Savage 8-2. "This was the best we plaYed in a while," said a beaming Turcotte. 'We had a bad garne earlier against Scott (Renfrew's Ian Scott), but I like the way we came back against Ziola. We played well.' Ziola, attempting to, clear a pair of rocks on the 12-foot ring, fanned his shooter, giving the Oshawa skip a free draw for two in the lOth end. Chairing this year's Sun Life were Rob Morton and John Gardner. Last year's winner Dave Velanoif was not a factor in this year's event. First prize to McPherson's rink was $8,000.
