Melien began with a fourth in the 50-metre butterfly on Friday, behind Andrea Nugent of Calg- ary (28.06 seconds), Madeleine Scarborou h of Britain and Emannuela Viola of Italy. Melien's time was 28.67 seconds. On Saturday, in the 25m free- style, Melien had a time of 12.52 seconds to finish behind Helena Aberg of Sweden (12.12) Kristin Toph am of Winnipeg and Andrea Nugent of Calgary. Her time was one minute, 3.65 seconds in the 100m backstroke, behind powerhouse Krisztina Egerszegi of Hungary (1:01.55), Anne-Marie Anderson of Toronto and Anne Barnes of Victoria. Melien was a nuember of Canada's B team which finished second in the 4-by-50m medley relay. She was on a team with Anne Barnes, Keltie Duggan and Jane Kerr, finishing behind the A teami of Alison Higson, Anne- Marie Anderson, Andrea Nugent and Kristin Topham.
