By Debbie Luchuk St. John's Anglican Church, Port Whitby, bas a new minister replacing' Rev. Stanley Isher- wood. Rev. Victor Li has assumed the ministry, and has spent the Iast three years as assistant at Graoe Anglican Church in Markham. 99 was offered a few choices by the bishop, and this was the first one offered. I liked the potential here,» Li said. Li graduated from Wycliffe College in 1985, and St. John's is his first parish in wbicb he will be the incumbent minister. * Li is looking farward to the challenges of ministry at St. * John's. "I tbink cburch growth is a challenge. With the development that is happening, this will pro- bably happen soon. We're in a ood p osition to do something. Growth spiritually is another * challenge." Li feels that the Anglican church is undergoing a period of * self-examination and searcbing for a new identity with the chai- lenge of ministering to a chang- ing society. 'There are quite a few issues in Cbristian education in general. How do we keep aur people up to date? What makes us Anglican, especially in the context of ecumenical coap- èi-ation? "With the new Book of Alter- native Services, somne people feit that we had lost something. We're struggling ta find, our iden- tity again in ternis of liturgy." ûx said that the congregation at St. John's bas largely accepted the new p rayer book, and be is Sljeased that be will not have ta ead bis congregation tbrougb what bas been a difficuit adjust- * ment eisewhere ta the new ser- vices. "In general, I think we have to, make aurselves relevant in aur world. I was very pleased with wbat Bishop Finlay said about finding aur raie in the contem- porary world (in a recent address). We have ta find a way in variaus social ministries. There bave been a lot of changes in the church core and in com- munities around us, and we have ta help aur people ta, deal with these changes." Li feels that the tapics af con- traversy for the churcb in the last three years bave been the Book of Altenative Services, wamen in the xinistry and the permission given cbildren ta take communion before their confir- mation. On wamen in the ministry, Li SEE PAGE 21 Minnesotan new pastor at Enianuel By Debbie Luchuk Emmanuel iRefarmed Churcb's new pastar, Rev.
