GO should provide access GO Transit facilities should be. modified to allow handicapped individuals access to GO trains, says Durbamn regional council. On a suggestion b Whitby councillor Tom Edwards, regional counicil unanimously approved that GO be requested to make stations handicapped( wheelchair) accessible. "This is a chance to give the handicapped gainful employ- ment," said Edwards. 1He told council that GO staff have indicated handicapped accessibility is possible wvhile GO's political heads have indica- ted stations are not. 'We have to resolve the dicho- tomy between those two. We have to find out which one is right,» said Edwards. e presented council with two p etitions, one collected by Whitby Branch 112, Royal Caria- dian Legion, with more than 200 names calling for better accessi- bility. Youth honored for fast action By Debble Luchuk A WiZtby youth bas been honored by the Whitby- fire department for quick action in assisting bis brother to medical help in an accident at a hockey camp in August 1988. Clayton White, 12, was attend- ing the camp with his younger brother Ryan, 8, and bis father Dave when Ryan was punctured with an arrow found on an archery range. Ryan put the arrow inside bis pant leg to hoId it until they returned to camp, and fell, forc- ing the arrow into bis chest. 'We were walking around, and walked to wbere the archery range was. When he ( Ryan) saw the arrow, he wanted to kee it. He put it down bis pant leg, it ( tripped) a tree stump and feil. It went straight into bis left side," Clayton said. The arrow nîissed every organ, tbankfully, but Clayton did not pull it out. He had learned in the Whitby fire'department's junior firefighters course that he should not. remove anything from an injury, and that he should get the victim to medical belp as soon as possible. Clayton picked bis brother up, removed bis pants, and seeing the injury, decided not to remove the arrow. He brought Ryan to his dad and froni there, Ryan was taken to hospital in Halibur- ton. Dave White said that bis son underwent two. hours of x-ray and examination before doctors removed the arrow, to determine wbether the arrow bad pierced TheWhieshad nothing but praise for the junior firefighter CLAYTON WHE (left), a graduate of the junior firefighter.program, helped brother Ryan (right) to medical aid when Ryan had an accident with an arrow.
