The land was downzoned to low density from hand medium density. Wityand Durham had given approval to the downzoning but a letter from the Ministry of Municipal. Affairs objected to the decision. The letter also asked the two go vernment levels to comment on the minis> 'objection. Witbyhafts already objected and was asking the Region to . do tfp1iqnmAvai Brunelle asked that the deci- sion be .postponed. He then, gave the Region planning department a report from the Physical and Economical Security CommTittee (PES) which he said shows Whitby provides more affordable housing than Oshawa. "The report will back up Whitby's point. We have been approving affordable housing," said Brunelle. But the report used by Brunelle is only a compilation of figures and not an officiai report by the Social Planning council, according to PES chairman Don Warren. "That doesn't deserve an in- ference that Whitby is doing well (when it cornes to providing affordable housing," said War- ren. The statistics show that Whitby has 559 assisted units, making up 3.83 per cent of its total 14.600 dwelling units. Oshawa, on the other ha'nd, with a total of 42,520 units, has 1,393 assisted units or 3.28 per cent. Assisted housing is described as housing for peoplewho recei- ved governrnent assistance. "We are beating Oshawa in that respect, that should be in- cluded with our arguments," said Brunelle. But Warren said both munici- palities are behind in providing affordable housing.
