Davis was born in 1889 in Safe Harbour, Bonavista '.Bay, Nfld, to Jokebed and Thomas Attwood. She was the second of five chul- dren. Her father owned and operated a fishing schooner called the "Parallel" and fished off the shores of Newfoundland and Labrador. Emma cooked on the boat on many trips and has many stories to tell of an Eskimo's visît to the Parallel for afternoon tea at which she ser- ved biscuits and jam. When young in Newfoundland, she spent her ree time ice skat- ing and bob-sleighing. Her home responsibilities included carding, spinning and knitting socks, sweaters and underwear from wool of thé family's sheep. She also designed and hooked her own rugs. Summers were busy times of gardening, berry picking and preparing for winter. On Dec. 26, 1908, she married John Gill Davis, also of Safe Harbour.
