Bis 113 and 114 are similar to the past legislation, but allow for municipalities to make the decision on Sunday shopping, and to impose stricter penalties for those businesses that break reégional Sunday shopping byl aws.. Durham MPP Allan Furlong has gone on record as saying he feels that Durham will not ado t wide open Sunday shopping. H ie feels the legislation is a positive step, for it provides for stiffer fines for those breaking Sunday retail laws as set down by a region. Durham Liegional chairman Gary Herrema does not think wide open Sunday shopping is in the future for Durham. "I think if it takes royal assent, we will monitor what is happening, then meet with'the police commission and our awyers to decide (what the, Region will do). "I don't want Sunday shop- ping. I'm not ready to open up te Whitby Mail and downtown, on Sundays. We may possibly have to look at it (Sunday shop- ping) for Port Perry. "There may be a hittle less shopping (than goes on nowi),» Herrema saidacring that large drug 'stores and similar ope- rations may be shut down on Sundays. We will monitor the situation and make adjustments,» he con- cluded. Mayor Bob Attersley is against Sunday shopping, and as a regional councillor said, "Region voted against Sunday shopying.
