Built'30 yeais.ago and recently completing an expansion of its 30 years inWhitby warehouse facilities, the Whitby plant produces various dairy, hog, poultry, steer, horse and specialty feeds and milk repla- cers. Plant manager Doug Clifford says these products are distribu- ted through a regional system of independent dealers, resulting in a good relationshipwith the agri- cultural community. Involved with Purina for 12 Leader in animal nutrition years, Clifford has held several positions at various locations in Quebec and Ontario. With high regard for the staff working in Whitby, Clifford calls them a "good crew, a good mix of godeople. " 2kitb is friendly and has lots to ofer,» adds Brett Bonwell, regional sales manager. Trans- ferring from the United States three months ago, Bonwell had Yreviously left behind a success- ul career to come to Ralston Purina, "impressed by their com- mitment to quality products, quality people, and quality ser- vice. » The two expect the free-trade agreement will help Purina, with more plants to be constructed south of the border. Since its founding in St. Louis, Missouri in 1894, and the open- in of Canadian operations at Woodstock in 1928, Ralston Purina's famous checkerboard trademark has come to be asso- ciated with a lot more than its poular dog and cat chows. Leading the chow industry in product research and innovation, urina has been a pioneer, deve- loping products such as: - "Checkers", the first ever pelle- ted feed, still the most popuTar; - the first dried calf feed, calf startena; - the launching of coarse rations for dairy cows; - the introduction of pre-con- ditioning receiving chow for beef cattle; - high energy dairy rations with fibre; - high energy hog rations, known as H-O. Ralston Purina offers other products such as: - Accu-line poultry rations which hel regulate egg size; - Maxi-Tech 40, a higb energy dairy supplement wbich in- creases milk production and minimizes weight loss in early lactation; - mineral Checkers and Sup- R-Blocks, a weatherproof block formulated to balance forages and limit consumption in cattle. Coming.off a good all-around year, Purina has had 53 new dealers join in Canada since 1980. Thirty-six out of 116 dealers have sold Purina products for more than 15 years, which the plant and sales manager attri- bute to Purina's ability to iden- tify needs and create new mar- kets., keaîston Purina Canada pro- duces more than 500,000 tonnes of livestock and poultry feed in eastern Canada, part of the seven million tonnes that Ral- ston Purina produces annually worldwide. With plants similar to Whitby's on several continents, the Purina team intends to grow, with plans to try and break ground in Africa. 260 stores are supplied by Whitby LCBO warehouse By Debbie Luchuk The Liquor Control Board of Ontario warehouse in Whitby is the distribution point for the liquor and wines of 260 LCBO stores in Southern Ontario. Located on Boundary Rd., the large building has warehoused domestic and imported alcoholic products smce 1985. Two hundred. employees work at the facility to -distribute up to 70,000 shipments a day. Employees belong .to the Union of Ontario Liquor Control Board employees. No expansion is planned for the facility in the near future.
