Seniors have special dietary needs. With a slower metabolie rate, the older person needs less * calorie intake than when younger to prevent unhealth *weight gain. At the same time, the senior * still requires a balanced diet with ail major food groups repre- sented: meats an d meat pro- duets, fruit and vegetables, bread and bread products and milk and dairy products. Unfortunately, with many seniors living alone or with their mate only, it is ail too easy to just get daily meals out of cans or to skip certain aspects of Canada's Fod Guide. Sometinies it's hard to motivate yourself to make a balanced Lately, there bas been a lot of discussion about fibre and decreasing fat in the diet, not just for seniors but for everyone Of alI ages and stages. The Whitby Seniors' Activity Centre is sponsoring the 'Living Well' program in order to address the seniors' dietary needs, and to assist seniors in setting up the best diet for optimum enjoyment of life. The first of the Living Well program lectures is to be held on Th ursday, March 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the WIhitby Public Library. Guest speaker will be Janice Lewis, nutritionist with the Dur- ham Regional Health Services departmnent. he lecture and slide show will be on "decreasin g fat and in- creasing fibre» in t he diet, with a question-and-answer period to follow. Literature, information and recipes will be available. Admission is $1 to be paid at door or at the seniors' centre. Register by March 22 by calling Anna Russell at 430-7729. A weekly 'H-ealth Drop-In' wl be held at the Whitby Public Library starting Thursday, March 30 fromn 1 to 4 p.m. in the auditorium. Heart rate, blood pressure and weight will be checked. General health and wellness information will also be available. The Living Well workshop series focusing on nutrition, fit- ness, self care and stress management will be starting at various locations throughout Whity iCuigRgnyPlace, Green Towers. "Through these awards, we express our deep appreciation te seniors who continue te use their talents and energies for the benefit of their communities, and for society as a whole," said Wilson. Individuals as well as community organizations are invited te nominate senior achievers in their area. Nominees must be 65 years of age or older, residents of Ontario, and contribute significantly te their community during thir retirement years. An impartial selection of committee will review the submidssions and choose the winners. The awards will be presented at a special ceremnony in June -- the annual celebration of Senior Citizens' Month in Ontario. 'When we celebrate Senior Citizenf? Month, we recognize the collective wisdom, experience and service of a growing and vital segment of our population," said Wilson.
