Born in Scotland, she emigra- ted to Canada at the age of 5. She attended the University of Toronto and took administration schooling there, one of the few women at the school at that time. Before she married, she wor- ked as a pvate secretary. A t age 28, and three marriage pro- posais in her past, Jesse mar- ried and had a son, Jim, Who would later become mayor of Whitby. And she travelied. Jesse's bus- band wouid not fly, so she travel- led the worid alone. "MIy busband wouid not go on a plane. It's wonderful to, travel, the people were fun," she said. Nowadays, Jesse keeps bu-sy with craftwork, "neariy every- thing except crocheting." And doing what she does best: taik to others and keep their spirits Up. "'Some people can 't do any- thing. I visit people in the hospi - tai (within the Lodge). I like people. I like taiking to people. '<We're ail different, and we ail look for different; things out of life. I love to talk to everyone."i Having iived much of her life in Whitby, Jesse has many memories of the town as it was. She says she remembers "Bobby Attersley when he was "this high," holding ber armn at waist level. These memories, combined with ber travelling experiences, avid reading of bistorical noveis and a warm, engaging persona- lity. provide often mucb needed companionship to those witbin the Lodge, residents and *e pioyees alike.
