PAGE 26, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1, 1989 Board has'lobbying kit'in attempt for more funding Once again, the Durham Board of Education is scrambling to get the maximum funding from the Ministry of Education to alle- viate the chronic capital funding shortage experienced in recent years. Communications officer for the board, Mary Wylie, and chair- man of the board, Lorna Murphy, have compiled a Iobbying kit for trustees and a series of six dif- ferent cards with pictures of overcrowded situations to enforce the idea that more capital fund- ing is needed. 'We're asking for help from the community. Mary Wylie has put together six different cards to send to each of the school advi- sory committees, accompanied by a stamped envelope and addresses appropriate for that school to send (the cards) to," said Murphy. "We want to get as many signatures'as possible on each card. "She has also prepared three or four kits for trustees to make presentations to school advisory The Council of the Corporation of the Town of Whitby intends to pass by-laws to change the names of Scepter Street and Elizabeth Crescent, as shown below. The name of Scepter Street will be changed to Elizabeth Crescent North. The name of Elizabeth Crescent, north of Manning Road, will also be changed to Elizabeth Crescent North. "Lobbying has to take place this month, and we have to find as many angles as possible to get the message to as many people with contacts,"he said. As part of the lobbying effort trustees will meet with regional chairman Gary Herrema and mayors of the area municipali- ties on March 8. Headquarters debate may return office space afforded the Region's employees. "I'm convinced we are not get- ting 40 hours a week work out of the Region's employees because of the conditions they are work- ing in. It's not their fault, it's regional council's fault," said Drumm. He is hoping the mayors use common sense and decide to do something about the lack of space. "There is a perception that if you work for government you work in a Taj Mahal atmposhere. Well, that is not the case," said Drumm. He hopes the regional head- quarters stays in Whitby but he is not going to follow party lines if a site is chosen outside Whitby. "Whatever happens, I watit the best for the Region and its em ployees. "I.want a building, a home. Everything in this region seems to run on an emergency basis. Well, this is an emergency," said Drumm. Edwards voted against the removal of the westerly perime- ter walkway because he said it is not easy to get access to the water if condominiums are in the area. "Since 1936 that has been pri- vate property and now we want public access," noted councillor Joe Drumm. He said the section of walkway being removed is from south of the bridge on Brock St. S. to the boat launch. "We are not taking the lakesh- ore away from this community and I won't hold this up because of a walkway," said Drumm. Council also heard from a resi- dent, Mary Rycroft of 53 Longfel- low Ct., who asked that council not remove the walkway as a condition of urban design appro- val. "If you eliminate this now you may have problems when it comes to public access during rezoning and site plan approval stages,' said Rycroft. Mayor Bob Attersley noted that with council's approval, the walkway is now officially remo- ved from the plan. Plans call for the construction of four 15-story condominium buildings and 150-230 town- houses as well as a recreation complex and open space at the harborfront. As part of the development, three of the condominium build- ings will be on the former Car- tier-McNam ara property. Cartier is expected to vacate the premises by September. Cos- can is expected to begin construc- tion in September, if they receive rezoning and site plan approval, on the f-rst condominium build- ing. Obituaries VICTOR CIECHANOWICZ Victor S.
