For some raoThe Star saw fit te resurreet the threat of a new airport in Pickering as the lead article in their Sunday edition of that date. They revealed some information (a report?) on the subject which no one else seems ta, have had, with the resuit that a great fiuriy of concerned activity was generated within the rest cf the news media. In anticipation of inquiries from concerned constituents I contaeted the office of the Minister cf Transport on Monday with my own inquiries. I was advised clearly and definitely that there was no new report or studyon the Pickering airport either received or commissioned by them. Furthermore they did not know anything about the report ta which The Star had alluded. I think it is safe te acknowledge that there are problems at Pearson International Airport, problems which must be addressed and for which solutions must be found. Thie volume cf air traffic wishing ta, fly inta the Toronto area is bound ta, increase and with it the need for creative solutions ta present and future problems. In the discussions and planning that will be taking place I believe that the following tapies should be included as items that could help ta resolve the situation at Pearson International Airport. Aithough not limited ta these items, the list inceludes a fourth terminal at Pearson, an additional runway at Pearson, banning of recreational flyers from Pearson, diversion cf private corporate planes from Pearson, increased use of Toronta Island, Oshawa and Buttonville airports, transfer cf cargo and charter fiights to, Mount Hopo Airport in Hamilton, and the hiring cf more traffic controllers. The provincial goverrnment of Premier Bull David refused in the seventies ta, provide necessary services such as roada and sewers ta the Pickering airport landa. This effectively scuttled the airport. I rnight point eut that the service needs are stili here for an airport in Pickering. Se, if the government of David Peterson really doesn't want such an airport, it can resort lto the saine methods cf thwarting it. Given the sericus ground transportation problenis that exçist in the western parts cf Durham Region and the limited ability of the municipalities ta, keep up with the demands on their services the Province will have a key role ta, play in the probleins' solutions. The proposed construction cf Seaton, a city of some 100,000 people, on provincial land just south cf the Pickering airport lands, will beone part cf the problem and create additional pressure cf its own. The Pickering airport lands are there and the governnient is ccmmitted te, retaining a portion cf them for a future airport.
