She missed the OFSAA record by just five-hundredths of a second as she won the 100-metre freestyle. Melien also just missed breaking her own Ontario record (set last year) for the 100rn breaststroke. And she was part of the Ander- son relay team, which also indlu- ded Heather Armitage, Jennifer Thatcher and Wendy Primeau, that was second in the 200 med- Iey relay event. Both Anderson and the first- place team from Earl Haig broke the OFSAAý record in the relay event. Pr-imeau was second in the 200m freestyle and ninth in the 100m freestyle. Armitage was fourth in the 50m freestyle and eighth in another event. In men's swimming, Stefan Timms of Anderson was ninth in the 400m freestyle. Derek Phillips of Henr Street ada second place fînish in the 200m backstroke and a third in the 200m freestyle. Julie Leswick had a fifth place finish in the 200m free style and a sixth in the 200m backstroke. More than 150 schools corn- peted in the meet which is one of the largest high school swim- ming meets in North America Brooklin- Whitby draw prize winners Sandor Szigeti of Toronto was the first place winner in the Brooklin-W7hitby Minor Hockey Association fundraising draw held February 18. First prize was a choice of a tri pto Disneyland or $1,500. Sýeéond prize of $500 went to Sylvia Thompson of Scarborough. Whitby Ontario Transportation System minor novice AA team advanced te the semi-finals of the 34th annual Timmy Tyke hockey tourna.ment in Toronto before being eliminated by a strong Brampton AAA teamn 6-0. Whitby advanced te the semi-final by defeating 'Peterborough 1-0 and Etobicoke 5-4 in earlier round action. In the victory over Peterborough, goaltenders Shari Bryksa and Chuck Coles teamed for the shutout while Tanner Westfall provided the scoring. The win over Etebicoke came after a shutout as the teams were tied 3-3 at the end of regulation Dowson w'ns Ont ario under 10 championship Leslie Dowson of the Whitby Iroquois Swim Club won an Ontario championship for girls aged 10 and under after she won five events at the Ontario age group ch ampionships in Brant- ford arch 3, 4and 5. Dowson was one of 15 Whitby club swimmers at the event which had a total of 820 swim- mers from 63 clubs. She won the 400-metre freestyle, 200m free- style, 100m freestyle, 100m back- stroke and 200m backstroke. Aaron Lo, in the boys' aged 10 and under division, won silver in the 200m breaststroke and bronze in the 100m breaststroke. For girls il and 12, Renee Ayotte won bronze i the 100mn and 200m breaststroke events. Neil Balan was fourth in the 200m breaststroke consolation event for boys il and 12. Peggy Hefford, in girls 13 and 14 was fourth in the lOOm fiy, fifth in the 100m freestyle, sixth in 50m freestyle and eighth in 200m freestyle and 200m fi y. Jessica Nesbitt was seventh in 200m fly consolation and eighth in 100m fly consolation for girls il and 12. Other Whitby swimmers parti. cipating were Michael Kerekes, Iain Burnett, Molly Morrice, Annie Morrice, Patricia Luke, Suzanne Cook. Dainty and Hayley time. Whitby had salvaged the game and forced the shootout by soing 3 times in the final five minutes of the game te erase a 3-0 deficit on goals by Evan Kitamura, Westfall and Randy Davidson while Justin Terry provided the setups as hie earned assists on each of the groals. In the shootout, which featured 3 shooters frorn each teani, Wvhitby prevailed 2-1 on goals by Evan Cardwell and Ryan H-ickingbottom while goltender Coles was beaten by only one Etobicoke player. Paul Brooks tipped in Adam Parks' shot from the blue line in the first overtim e prod to give Whitby a hard fought win. Whitby was down 3-1 but got goals from Brooks and Wayne Primeau his second of the game, to send the game into overtime. Coach Brian Dillion said he was happy with his team's corne back. Whitby will play the second and third game of the seies in Milton next weekend. Then return to Iroquois Park if a fourt.h or fifth game is required. Atoms lose flrst game The Whitby major atoms lost the first game of the Ontario semi-finals against Milton, 6-2 in Milton Sunday. Brian Lodge and Brian Scott had the Whitby goals. The team feli behind 3-0 early and was neyer able to catch Milton.
