Interested citizens of Whitby Iare invited to attend a «'twinning meeting' on April 25 at 7 p.m. in the Whitby Municipal Building. Plans for the weekend will be outlined. These exchanges were started in the mid-60s suseuent te a resolution adopted by the Quebec Federation of Mayos and Reeves as a centennial projeet. The intent was te strengthen the ties. between English-speaking and French-speakcing municipalities in Canada. Whitby bas invited te twin with Longueuil because of a friendship which has arisen between the Mayor of Longueuil, Marcel Robidas, and the late Father Leo Austin. Father Austin met a group of Whitby Rover Scouts, led by Bennie Lahaye, on their arrival in Longueuil. Scouts retraced the journeys of, the voyageurs in a canoe trip as a centennial project. According te Edwards, the weekend will include a reception at Whbitby Town Hall on F'riday at 6 p.m. te reaffirmn the twinning vows. There will then be dinner, entertainment and dance at the municipal building. Saturday will involve visits by the Longueuil contingent te the homes of the Whitby hosts during the morning in an attempt te increase their knowledge of each other's culture. This year the twinning committee is concentrating on activities in the immediate. Whitby area. The tentative program provides for a longer brunch time, te be spent with friends developed over the years. Sunday, June 18 will commence with an ecumenical service at a local church followed by a final reception and luncheon in the municipal building.. Interested citizens of Witby are welcome to participate in any or aIl of these functions. "It is not necessary te be bilingual in order te benefit from these excbanges," says Edwards. The William Robson House 300 Byron Street North Whitby, Ontario REASONS FOR DESIGNATION OF 300 BYRON STREET NORTH, WHITBY Historical This house was built around 1871 by William Robson, a contractor and builder. Mr. Robson was very active in community affairs as a member of the Whitby Board of Education in 1874, and he also served as a member of Town Council for five terms. Mr. Ftobson was elected as Mayor of Whitby in 1905. Architectural The William Robson House consists of. a vernacular two-storey bùff brick house with a second storey Gothic window and decorative vergeboard in the centre bay gable. Twin one-storey verandahs once f lanked the centre bay with a separate entrance door to the interior vestibule of the bay; however, only the south verandah remains today with its bellcast roof and decorative trim. Two double brick chimneys are situated on the north and south gable ends. AIl the exterior windows except for the pointed Gothic window in the gable of the bay have decorative brick surrounds executed in a manner resembling stone Gothic style windows. Decorative brickwork features which have been incorporated into the design of the house include raised quoins on the corners of the house and centre bay and a raised panel along the base of the brick walls intended as a water table. Each window sash is double hung with 2/2 lighjs and some have accompanying stprm window sash with 2/2 lights.
