The solar spectrum 'ranges from infrared and radio raya through alI colors of visible light ta ultraviolet, gamma, X and cosniic rays. Infrared rays are usually harmless ta, human tissue but can cause a burn if they are too intense. -Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) whether from sunlight or artificial sources (lamps) can cause severe injury to the human skin. The amount of skIn damage depends on one's lifetime exposure ta, UVR. The longer the exposure, the greater the ipjury, the shorter the wavelength, the greater the danger. UVA raYs were formerly considered harmless, b ut ini the long run these rays (inclucling those from tanning lamps) can produce barmful skin changes. UVB are rays that cannot pass through glass b ut causes sunburn and tanning wrinking and aging. UVO are rays that are filtered out before the sunlight reaches the earth. They are also emitted from artificial sources such as germicidal llghts and mercury lamps. These rays can burn the skin and cause eye damage. When UV rays hit the human skin they are either absorbed or reflected. Damage is either acute (short termed) or chronic (long termed). UiV rays usually penetrate beyond the outer epidermal layer (top layer of ekin) to the inner structures where damage can occur to nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. With excessive and continued exposure, the sIn thinnens, looses its elasticity and can develop skin cancer. The immediate effect of the skin is sunburn. Sunburn usually does not have any lasting consequences unless it is constantly repeated. (Keep in mind that skin injury can stait, at any time).
