WHrrBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19,1989, PAGE 37 Whitby St. John representative attends camp in Australia By Debbie Luchuk A Wihitby girl represented, the St. John Ambulance organization of Ontario and Canada at an international first aid competi- tion and camp in Australia in January. Tammie Staples, 16, beat out competition, to be one of two representatives for the province attending the event. The Ienry Street High stu- dent first heard of the event in May through a letter to all divi- sions of St. John Ambulance,and Staples was selected by her peers in the Whitby division to enter the competition for one of the two coveted positions of repre- sentative for Ontario. Testing was held in Toronto, and Staples said «three or four officers asked questions, like an interview," and her credentials were considered. Staples is a cadet leader,and organized and runs the youngest St. John group in the Whitby division.« "I was excited that I was picked,"she said. Upon arrival in Australia, she said, "two people picked us up., and took us to the camp the next day. There were people therD from all around the world." She said that camp time was filled with tests of first aid sAille, sports, and t local attrac- tions in theQueensland terri- tory. Staples lived in a cabin with nine other girls, six of them Canadian and three Australians. She noted that the Australian St. John corps have to learn some different first aid techni- ques that the Canadian corps do ] .not. "Theirs (first aid techniques) is different. They have to deal with poisonous snakes,» she said. Staples has made several friends, and said that she has already received -a few letters from people she met at the.camp. Some undin for the trip was provided by the Toronpoead- quarters office, but Staples was most overwhelmingly supported by her corps. A tee n dance raised most of the money, clearing $1800 with the generous assistan;ce od Tomn Sears of Henry Street High Sehool, Andrew Hunt produc- tions that provided deejay ser- vices at cost, and John Smith of A&P, who provided free pop for the corps to seil at the dance. Other fundraisin events and drives were held 1y the corps members to fill.out the remain- ing financial requirement.
