Natiional Forest Week May 7 to 1 3 By The Ontario Forestry Association Our environmient is precious. It sustains us. We have not been good to it through the years in spite of the admonitions of agriculturists, foresters, biologists and others. Recent years have seen a surge of interest and. a- growing awareness of environmental affatirs. rThat's good. Much of it seems to be of the 'fault-finding- with-others' variety. That's not alI bad but it would be nicer if there was more evidence of the look-what-we're doing> kind of thing. There are some good things. In the case of our forests, for example, we in Ontario own about 85 per cent of the forests in the province. We have assigned their management to the Ministry of Natural Resources. That's fine. But do we ever check te see how well MNR is making out? Do we fund themn adequately te do the job? We hear criticisms occasionally but what of the good news? Do we realize that the number of trees planted annually in Ontario more than doubled from 1982 te 1987? (Prom 80 to 163 million.) Do we reauze that the annual area cutover increased by 3 per cent in that timne (223 to 229 thousand hectares) while the area treated, silviculturally increased by 70 per cent? (Prom 200 to 341 thousand hectares a year.) Do we realize that our production forest consists of about 35 million hectares? That is about one-third the area of the province. And what do mnost of us know about the forest management agreements the ministry has signed with several companies? There are some good things happening. Sure, there are problems. We need to do a lot better than we did in the past. We need to pay a lot more attention to our forests. That's why the Ontario Forestry Association sponsors National Forest Week each year. This year it runs from May 7 - 13. Town haits construcion The Town of Whitby has put a step work order on Arch Homnes, after the company cut down at least 12 trees in the area of Martinet St. last week. The Town says tree-cutting was not part of the subdivision agreement. "The damn developers in this town have to be made aware that the town," said area councillor Dennis Fox at council Monday night about the incident. Hewas informed by planning directer Bob Short that the plan- ning department will be meeting wihArch to inspect the site before the step work order is lifted.
