Free Press photo In case of a stin.. Stinging insects are undoubtedly our most unwelcome guests each summer. We're forced te, tolerate them, but we shouidn't take their opportunity for granted. When an insect bites, it releases some saliva te which everyone reads differently. The reaction may be mereiy a temporary nuisance or very TIHE STINGS 0F SUMMER dangerous. The sting of a wasp, bee or hornet may niean only a day or two of mild discomfort te niost people, but perhaps for one per cent of the population, it can be fatal without prompt medical attention. The normai reaction is a red,* itchy bump. It can be xinixnized, in the case of a bee sting, by scraping out -- not pufling -- the barbed stinger. Wasps and hornets withdraw their stingers. In contrast te a harniiess local reaction, there may be a systemc or generalized one. Symptems include difficuit breathing, palpitations, cold skin, listlessness or fever. If any of these ccur, the patient should go to a doctor or hospitai immediateiy. Someone with a histery of such reactions shouid consult a doctor about medication te have on hand in case of emergency. WVhiie bees, wasps and hornets are the most common summer stingers, don't overiook mosquitos, biackflies, spiders, fleas ., and ticics. Your neighborhood pharmacy stocks various insect repeilents and products te relieve itching such as calamine lotion and zinc oxide ointment. Watch out for infection on bites that have been scratched. Remember te keep your hands clean and have disinfectants handy. Bites on children are best kept covered with light gauze until the irritation subsides.
