Gould emphasized that with s0 much to offer, residents need not look far for sightseeing excur- sions, , dining,g shopping and recreation within the 1,000-sq. mi. xpanse of the region. One survey showed that direct tourist spending, in the region was more than $7 -million in one year, and *15-million indirectly. However, it is believed that figures are now much higher. Gould says tourism, as an in- dustry, creates jobs and pois while Alfrey noted that residents spruce up their properties when tourist travel neaErby is evident.
