Vinco Ohprccio.Free Press photos Builder ansýwers criticism A Whitby builder s ays only three dead trees, not 12 live trees, were cut down in an in- cident that led to a stop_ work order by the Town during resi- dential construction on Martinet St. Frank Strittmatter, president of Arch Construction, says the stop work order also only applied to the trees, not overali construc- tion of the 73-ink home subdivi- sion which is 90 per cent com- plete. "I'm the guy who tried to save these trees," says Strittmatter. He notes that the location of a sidewalk along Martinet will determine whether or not 'trees are removed - a decision to be made by the Town. Hýe says the Town will have to decide whether to follow stan- dard procedure for the sidewalk, which would mean removal of trees, or change the sidewalk location to save trees., Strittmatter says Arch was un- f'airly criticized over the tree- cutting incident in a previous article in The Free Press. «I'm probably the only develo- per who fertilizes trees on site," says Strîttmatter. 0F WHITBY GOLD & DIAMOND CENTRE 10k TIE TAC 0k & 14k CHA.RMS FATHERS DAY A charming SPECTA.L gift for DadI *19.95 J UpT [Many styles to choose from! 50% off GENS' 10k DIAMOND CLUSTERS .l2ct T.D.W. $2 19.00 .l5ct T.D.W. $225.00 .3Oct T.D.W. $349.00 .5Oct T.D.W. $499.00 rOpen 10 am to9:30 pmj Monday - Saturday Ietween Woolco & Miracle Food Mart WHIT13Y MALL [reg. $69.95 r Qarz al Cock 1 Special $49,995 SPECTAL SERVICES *Watch Repair a Jewellcry Repair Ese byodjewelley e Apraisalas Wle yodJewellery * Ad-ial *Custom Design a Free Layaway L~436-9070 i'Maybe the developer can be blamed sometimes, but not always. It's certainly not the case this time. icI've probably planted more trees than many environmental- ists," he says of his previous construction work. He adds that the three dead trees he removed will allow others to grow., Hie will p lant 168 trees near the link homes as part of the subdivision agreement. The Arch homes back onto Martinet. He says he is «absolutely con- vinced" the Town will now decide to keep the trees and move the sidewalk. Leningrad FROM PAGE 1 says Carolann.
