So says Fred Jewell, who took over the office of Durham. Region sheriff on Monday, Aprii 24. He replaced Morley Bain who retired earlier this year' after being sherif for 24 years. Jewell- noted the foreruinners of today's sheriff were around long before sheriffs- of the wild West. Jewell bas been a sheriff since 1974, and rnost recently held the Vost in Huron Oounty. His biggest surprise since con; ing to Durham Region 18 the, différence in size between -the" two areas. "Here, everything is bigger in volume. You bave tbem bere (Whitby), in Oshawa and Ajax. Integration will bring aIl the courts.under one roof. Tere will be one counter the public can go to," said Jewell,-who wants to be a part of tbe revamping wbich 18 proposed to take place next year. The sberiff's office'is respon- sible for the enforcement of civil court laws, said Jewell. ,ýOne of their more important kunctions is the writ of seizure and sale of chattels and lands to satisfy a money judgment. 7The sberifl's office also uses a lot system to select 5,000poten- tial jurors annually. 0f that number, approximately 3,000 will be selected to act as jurors.
