<,WiItBYFREE MPRE$,WEDNESDAYI JUNE !14, 1989.,PAGE il1 Town denies rezomiingfor condo townhouses Whitby council has turned down a request by Whitby Estates Ltd. to remove an insti- tutional zoning at the southwest corner of Kendfalwood and Nichol Ave. in favor of 28 condomninium townhouses. The townhouses would become part of a subdivision already approved for the area. Anda Vopni, representing resi- dents opposing to the applica- tion, tod council the area already bas high density. uThisi area is already crowded,» said Vopni. «These things just* seem to slide. through without real pur- pose or, direction. To do this is 100 per cent in favor of the develôper," said Vopni. Leading council's oppositioni was east ward councillor Dennis Fox, who noted that counicil has alreatdy made a nurnber of con- cessions for the development'of the subdivision. "Phase one (which includes the block in the application) was to be completed in 1980,»n said Fox., The subdivision was given appro- val in 1975. "He (the developer) is fine years behind schedule.» Application iS withdrawn East Glen Properties bas with- drawn an application for a.'resi- dential development, composed of three buildings un to 16 stories in height, at t he north- West corner of South Blair St. and Water St., across from Hey- densbore Pavillon. Written submissions from the public opposed the. application While varous agencies had con- cerns. The Town planning depart- ment had reconimended that the application, on 12.49 acres n vacant land now zoned as indus- trial, b enied. Planning departmnent indicat ed that the application would remove developable industrial land for which services are avaiu- able. Whitby now bas 740 acres of developable industrial land, esti- mated to represent a 15- to 20-year supply. About 230 acres of that total are immediately available, including the property that had been proposed for deve- lopment. Before the decision, at, least two Whitby councillors had warnings about basing decisions on personal feelings. Regional, councillor Marcel Brunelle warned that the a.ppli- cationý should be judged on plan- ning and not on whether or not a developer is liked.. Regional councillor Joe Drummn, who opposed the appli- cation, became upset. at Brunelle's commenta and ,fired back that hie always bases his decisions on planning. North ward councillor Rosa Batten, who suppoýrted the appi cation at committee level, also warned about personal feelings. But hie noted that since the June 5 committee meeting, hie had a chance to review the appli- cation and was now opposed. "Thiese people are rnaking a fair request,» said Batten. ADD STP NO H GC.DN7.
