Blood donor rule change wante'd ý.By Mfike Johnston The fight by an'Ottawa woman who wants to donate biood for her daughter's surgery has been taken up bv two area wamen. Judy Dillabougb's two-year-old daughter Carnie is in need of serious surger-y by teend of the year. Dillabough,' of Ottawa. had' attempted to donate *blood directly for the surgery, but she was refused by the Red Cross. Dillabough is concerned that her daugbter will contract AIDS from a blood tranâtiÙsion. The problem hit . home for Velors Gibson of Oshawa. Five years ago she needed hip sur- gery, and the Red Cross would not allowher husband te donate biood specifically for ber surgery. "I didn't know who toefgtÎ then," said Gibson. Since hearing of DiIlabough's story, Gibson and Pat Washing- ton of Whitby have been passing out petitions requesting that the rules be changed. "'rm not against tbe Red Cross, they do a tremendous job. But we have to make the public aware of this. The laws have to be changed," said Gibson. "As a parent I can understand the concern. I don't want my kids to contract aids " said Gibson. She claimed she has not yet received a satisfactory answer as to why direct donations are not allowed. "Our current volunteers sys- tem is satisfactory,» said Jenni- fer PepaUl of the Toronto Red Cross Socie tt where blood donated in %urhamn Region is sent for testing and processing. She said the Red Cross can't g aurantee tbe transfusion of safe blood through a direct donation. "There is often peer pressure for donating blood and there is the possibility of not getting the proper medical and sexuai bis- tory, said Pepail. Since 1985, when the Red Cross began screeninq for AIDS, Pepali said of the nmne million units of blood passed on ta hospi- tais for transfusions, only one bas led to a case of AIDS. "There is a very, very minimal risk of contracting AIDS,» said Pe&all.n and Washington have begun paci.ng petitions in stores throughout Oshawa and Whitb y. Petitions have also been passed on ta Newfoundland, Nova Sc tia, Winnipeg and Edmonton. When completed, the petitions will1 be delivered ta Parliainent &l.ith a request ta change the1 necessary legislation.1 .AT WSIGOlf and Velora Gibson are attempting to collect enough names on petitions across Canada to change the rules involving blood donations to the Red Cross.
