William,. 79, and Dora Elsie Belle, 80, had been friends during their tenage years as residerits of neighboring farms in Biggar, Saskachewn, before they were married there on June 19, 1929. In 1934, they moved to Haliburton, Belle Madill's birthplace, and then moved to Whitby in 1940. On hand for their anniversary were their six children, Joyce Bain Bonnie Ferguson and Bill Grylîs, aIl of Whitby, Doug Grylis of Brooklin, Lillian Gorveatt of Canarvon and Barbara Groves of Astorville; 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandehil- dren. Out-of-town guests were from as far as Saskatoon, Sask., while plaques and certificates of congratulations from Queen Elizabeth II., Canada's Governor-General, the Province and Town of Whitby were presented. Among those on hand for presentations and congratulations were Ontario riding MP Rene Soetens an d Durhamn Centre MPP Allan Furlong, longtime friend Michael Starr, and Graoe Billings of Haliburton, a mid-wife «who brought a lot of the familyinto this world," said daughter Joyce Bain. Wmiliam, who says he and Bel le "both came from hardy families» (he from a family of nine, she from a -family of 12), won't admit to any special formula for Iong, happy marrnage. ,But he notes that 'We always had ways of settling our little,ý. problems and differences over the years. And we had our ffine family. "And a lot of people helped us when we needed it badly,». said William. «Neyer get mad,» is Belle's advice for good, long marriage. In 1914, the Madill family moved from Halibutn to Saskat- chewan where Belle's father was a foreman for road building through the 1920s and 1930s. William formerly worked for four years as a municipal clerk (part-time) and as a trapper and farmer in Haliburton, at a powder plant in Ajax, helped build Mosquito bombers at the GM plant in Oshawa during the war, worked with partner Ernie Jones on construction before going on his own as a home builder, and from 1962 to 1979 was part-time maintenance supervisor and assistant manager of custodial services for the Whi'tby and Ontario boards of education (amnalgamnated in- 1969-70). Both still live at the same Rossland Rd. E. property they first settled on in 1940. "le's a great day for granny and I. A 12-year-old boy was riding bis BMX bicycle from a walkway on to Winston Court. A car travelln westbound on' Winston collided with the victim at the end of the court. The boy was thrown from bis bicycle on to the Eidewalk. The victim was knocked out monientarily, receiving niinor injuries. The bicycle was run over and broken in two. The driver of the car f led the scene. The suspect vehicle, last seen southbound on Winston Court towards Kirby Crescent, is descrlbed as a dark-colored, full-sized car with little or no damnage.
