WHyryFIREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28,1989, PAGE 17 Chiropractorsin regiion treat more whiplashvcim By DebbieLuchuk Chiropractors in Durham Region are seeing an increased number of whipfash and neck injuries as a resuit of car acci- dents, according to Greg McCon- neli of Whitby, a doctor of chiro- practie. "We're seeing an awful lot of people with whiplasb injuries. I think it's due to the tremendous growth of traffie and the con- sequent number of accidents in this region," MeConneli said. McConnell bas been in practice for 14 years most of that time spent in Duriarn Region. "I see a wide cross-section of patients, and treat primayïly spinal and nerve conditions." Most of bis clients corne to him for relief of back pimil lower back orwipLË con- ditions. McDonnell said tbat any bad reputation that cbiropractie treatment bas is partly due to tbe description of manipulation as 'cracking." Cracking often suggests «breaking." "'It's ail in the description of it, iii in the choice of words. Wihen we correct a misalignment, one hears a popping sound, as opposed to a cracking sound." "nfortunately, chiropractors see most people when their con- ditions have advanced to a point where thepatient is in a great. deal of pain or discomfort. MeConnell stresses that patients recently involved in a car accident, for example, need to getp rompt medical attention and éhiropractie consultation. "If you're in a car accident, you sbould consuit the hospital or chiropractor, and get. an exa- mination and 'an x-ray. "Immediate action should be ice and rest. Take. it easy for 48 to 72 bours, to see what the full impact of the injuries are.- «The sooner you get yourself to a chiropractor the better, as it will hasten recovery." However, those who have had lingering, 'cbronic pain, degenerative conditions, can stili benef»it from chiropractic care. . Thre person in cbronic pain or witb a degeneration in the spine can- still be treated. We can relieve a lot of pain. We can't restore the spine, but wecan stop it from further degene- ration." MeConnell pointed out that chiropractie is a "wellness" medi- cine, and that chiropractors are. successful in treating xnany con- ditions other. than back or joint problmes. "We also treat headache pro- bleins, and conditions sucb as constipation, stomach conditions, menstrual cramps and dizziness, by manipulation of the spine." He said that niany conditions are related to an irritated nerv- ous system and misaligment of the spine, and that once the spine and nervou s system are tended to, these conditions often disappear.
