WHLTB PME PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28,1989, PAGE 33 No changle in tax instalment dat'-es There is no need for the Town of Whitby to change its tax in- stalmient dates for senior citi- zens, Whitby council has decided. Operations committee had been asked by Whitby resident Tomn Humphries to move the instalment dates to the end of each month, instead of the cur- rent dates in the middle of each month. Humphries, on behaif of' seniors, argued at committee June 19 that the extra two weeks could be used by seniors to, col- Iect additional interest. "I want a littie compassion and understanding for seniors. The gas, company and banks can do it (end of the month instalment dates). why can't you?" said Hùmphries. He said he lost $8 in interest this year because of mid-monthly installments. In a report to committee and council treasurer AI Claringbold noted that seniors could choose a daily interest savings account wnich would maximize interest. Humphries argued, however, "that old people don't want to change their banking system." Claringbold also reported it would be didificuit for the Town to establish a preferred payment ystem for seniors since the' Town's computer software does not have thie capability to segre- gate ratepayers. Claringbold also' noted that due to high housing costs, some seniors today are he1piing their children pay for homes which could also cause confusion in paying taxeq. Tlhe Town will also earn an extra $210,000 in interest by collectieg taxes during the mid- die of the month. Tis, said Claringbold, saves the taxpayer -$11 a year in reduced taxes. Committee, and on Monda night council, agreed wiMt Claringbold and voted not to change the instalment dates.
