JUSTIN CARDWELL of Whitby has ing in the Canadian championship earned a spot on this year's Ontario this August in Prince Edwar juvenile team which will be compet- Island. Free Prem photo Cardwell on Ontario golf team Four years ago 15-year-old Justin Cardwell took up the game of golf because his dad and riends played the game. In a few weeks, the Whitby youth will be representing Ontario at the Canadian junior golf championship to be held in Prince Edward Island. Cardwell made the team by first entering a qualifying tour- nament in Markham in July. He placed fifth at the event, shooting 77 on a par-72 course. Ontario wins bronze in Winn1peg The Ontario women's field lacrosse teani came home with a bronze medal from the Canadian championships held in Winnipeg last weekend. The Ontario team boasts three members from Whitby, Anne Windover, Natalie Brousseau and Shannon Tackney and one from Brooklin, Margot Jacobs. Teams from British Columbia, Manitoba, Alberta and Ontario competed. B.C. was favored to win the gold. (Scores for all games were not available at press time.) Ontario defeated Alberta in the bronze medal game 5-4 in overtime. Ontario trailed 4-2 after the first half but rebounded to tie the score. "We were pleased with that win. We worked hard to prepare for the Canadians and we didn't want to lose," said coach Barb Boyes. The tup three automatically advanced to the Ontario finals. The fourth to sixth players then moved on to a qualifying tournament at the Scarborough Golf and Country Club, held tbe following weekend. To advance to the Ontario final, players had to shoot under 92 on the par-72 course. Card- well shot an 85. At the Ontario tournament, held at the Kingsville Golf and Country Club, Cardwell shot 76 in the first round and had a par 72 in the second round to stand 11th after the first two rounds. During the next two days, he shot 83 and 79 to finish fourth in the juvenile division (14-16), qua- lifying for the Ontario team. A member of both the Country Lane golf course in Whitby and Oshawa Golf and Country club, Cardwell has been playing an average of 36 holes a day during the summer. He says Country Lane has taught him how to use his short irons properly because most of the holes require a driver then a wedge or short iron on to the green. He would, however, like to perfect his driving. "I would like to keep them straight," said Cardwell, who is entering Gr. 11 at Anderson Col- legiate this September. He enjoys the game immensely but has trouble explaining just why. "I just like it, it is hard to explain. The challenge, it's fun and the fresh air," said Cardwell, who has his eyes set on a United, States College golf scholarship and hopes to play professionally one day. He has a small piece of advice for those iust taking up the game - start by~taking lessons. "When you just go out and play you get bad habits that you tend to keep. Lessons showyou how to play properly," said Card- well. He has played most of the courses in Durham Region and rates Thunderbird Golf Course in Ashbum as one of the toughest because of its length. But he spends most of his time at Country Lane where he cre- dits golf pro Les Diggins and assistant pro Bob Zelliewith perfecting his game. "I would also like to thank the members at Country Lane for their support" said Cardwell, whose trip will be paid for by the Ontario Golf Association.
