WHITI3Y FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16, 1989, PAGE 9,1 'I 77uI Choose hu*1es' now for planting in the fait -For more than 50 years," Mes of ail kcinds' have* been garden favorites in Canada. These include variotis hybrids as well as species lilies. 0f the latter, there are more than 100 known types, about" two-tbirda, of which originate in Asia, one-quarter in North America -and the remainder in Europe. However, most of those grown today are Asiatic, or niid-century hybrids. These 'Mies have upward-facing flowers (or chalice type). The origin of these iles* lies in thie stte of Oregon, at the nursery of Jan de Graga in the middfle of the 2th century, hence the name. Initially,. the variety Enchantaient,' an orange cultivar, was the great favorite. Since then, however, it bas been overtâken in the popuflarity contest by ' Connecticut King,'P a beautiful yellow variety. Through intensive -cross-breeding, hybridizers have produced an array of new cultivars, such as the creamy-white «Sterling Star' and 'Mont Blanc-' an orange-red 'Prominence' and the pink 'Le Reve.' - Additional cross-breeding of mid-century hybrids wth tiger Miles (1. tigrinum) and orange L. bulbiferum has blurred the distinctions aniong the groups. Therefore, today, when we speak of Asiatic iles, we include aIl of the varieties with upward-facing flowers. L. speciosum makes its appearance late in the summer season, one of the last te bloom. It flowers in ri*ch shades of red and white with large flowers, 15 cm (6 ini.) or more wide. The blooms are reflexed, in shades of pink throughý red with darker red spots. The variety L. rubruni, as its name suggests, blooms red. Especialylovely iîsthe named variety%'chida, pink with white spots, pendant shaped with reflexed petals. Among the Oriental group of ies, one of the most important is 'Star Gazer,' which strongly resembles ' Uchida,'in that it, too, is pin and heavily spotted with red. owever, its bloomis tend te be bowl-shaped and larger. Perhaps the best known lily in North America is the Easter Lily, L. longifloruni. This white, fragrant truxnpet variety is actually native'-te the islands off Formosa. Its large flowers are horizontal on the stalk, so that they face directly ahead. Trumpets sometinies also are called calyx lilies, referring te, the outer petals of the flower. Easter Mies only bloom in the spring for that sacred holiday as a result of professional forcing techniques. Normally they bloom in the garden in midsunimer.
