WH[TBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16, 1989, PAGE 5 Hi. Welcome to 1954. That's me in the thumbnail photo over there,' in place of the guy who usuelly writes this stuif. Fmn fifteen years old. I build model airpianes, play hockey, and think about girls a lot. Then there's hockey. Some days, *that even takes my mind off girls. Last year, I played both midget and juvernle hockey. With the juvenile teamn -- most of the guys were two years older than me, or more -- I played mostly the bench, but we did go te the OMHA Ontario «DU provincial finals. Then we got beat,~ and got these nifty pure leather. grey jackets with creste and everything, for only $35 each. Heëy, linm not saying Fm any good. Coach says IFm neyer gonna be big enough. We've got this one gay et our high school who is going to be big enough, and good enough, one day. He plays with the Woodstock Junior 'B' Warriors, and people say they will win the title this year. Anyway, this one guy's just my age and he's their star. Hlis name's Bobby Hull. Everybody says bell play in the NHL one day. Talking about high school, being in Grade eleven eint ail that bad. I'm flunking French, but Ill neyer want to go to Paris anyway. Heard this weird song on the radio the other day, something about rocldng eround the clock. Some gtiys at the pool hall say that when they dance te, that song everybody just starts moving all over and don't dance close nor nothin'. That sure sounds like it ain't much, fun. I think about dancing somnetimes when I think about girls. Sometimes I hate dancing, sometimes I kinda like the idea but I'm not sure how Id go about FEEmT UP by Bill Swan Fi ft een something I wonder if you get over that or if you learn how. When inm not thinking about girls I read science fiction. I know, for instance, that before rPm sixty five, mon will walk on the moon. The plans are all laid out in this book callod Across the Space Frontior. See, first of aIl, men will ho shot inte the apper atmosphere for low orbits. Then, longer space rides and walks will happen. Then, Aneincans and Russians should join forces te, build a giant space platform, from which aIl space operations could be controliod: weethor satellites, communications, astronomy labs, and se on. TIhey'll, have te jein forces, because space exploration will be too costly for any one country. Soe, space will force countries to get along. elthough if you listen to politicans these days, that's not likely to happen. I have begun not to believe politiciens. Anyway, when they get the bugs outta the moon shot, then 111l be among the first to go. 1 got this ticket which guarantees to reserve my seat on the first commercial fiight to, the moon. I got it through the Science Fiction Book Club, at 105 Bond St. in Toronto, which in turn got it from Garden City Books in New York. >Thing isy I wonder how will they make sure that we ail get a chance? I suppose I just better hold on to th:is ticket. I hope I'm not too old by then. For money, I work after school and Saturcays, at Lambert's Poultry Farm in Bright, Ont. It's just a dash over the railway tracks, and it pays 85 cents an hour. That's about an hour and a hail each night, nine hours Saturday, say about 15-16 hours a week. That cornes to about $13-$14 a week. Not bad, really. .1 cen buy a pair of jeans for $3.95, fancy tshirts for $5, a sports jacket for $15. And bey! In January when I get my licence, I~ll be able to buy three gallons of g as for a buck. (My chemistry teacher says that would be about 14 litres.) You cen cruise around a long time on that. Heck, to fili the tank costs $3-$4, but the old man would faint if I did that. A dance costs 75 cents, hamburgers a quarter, coffee a dime. A Pepsi (twelve full ounces, that's a lot) cornes to nine cents, two cents deposit included. Wrigley's Spearmint costs six cents a peck. But gotta go. Have te pick up a peck of smokes (33 cents) (don't tell my hockey coach or rny Mom, she'd kill me) and a tube of Byrlcreern (a little dabIl do ya).
