Citations were anged out to members of the public who ass- isted police in arrests, and to police officers who have served-- more than 20 and. 30 years on the force. Two Oshawa men received citations for assisting a store clerk in Whitby last year. On the afternoon of June 22, 1988, a man entered a milk store in Whitby and, with a file in his hand, lunged at a female clerk and demanded money. Marvin Ramsay and Stephen Kerr were in the store and wit- nessed the attack. Ramsay ran to the man and managed ta, overpower the sus- pect. Kerr also becamne involved and the two were able to hold him until police arrived. Other award winners were: DAVID PARFITT-OSHAWA On Feb. 6, 1989, a home on Wasaga Court in Oshawa caught fire. Inside was a 14-year-old youth with a 10-month-old baby sleeÊping upstairs in a crib. The youth ran into the street and yelled for help. Parfitt, also 14 ran into the house and loca- teâ the baby. He ran downstairs into the living room which was now filled with smoke. Parfitt was able to cover the baby's face and make it outside. DAN FINGER-PICKERING On Sept. 12, 1988, a female storekeeper was chasing a man who had just robbed a store at the Pickering Town Centre. 'Finger took up the c hase and eventually caught the man. It was later learned-that he was on parole on a charge of murder. GEORGE MANNEH AND UAN BEATON-PICKERING On June 9, 1988, a man, wear- ing a mask and armed with a handgun, entered a bank at a plaza in Pickering. He demaned and received $4,000 and immediately fled from the bank. Beaton andMan- neh gave chase and assisted police in catching the man who was later charged with nine other armed robberies. FITZROYJOHNSON, JOHlN MATTSON, GARY ALLEN -AND RODNEY BEAULIEU - PICKERING On Aug. 15,1 1988, Johnson, the owner of a store in Pickering, was closing for the night when a man, wearing a nylon stocking and carrying a gun, entered the store. He demanded the receipts from Johnson who grabbed the gun. During the struggle, John- son was stabbed twice in the chest. Realizing that the gun was an imitation, Johnson ran out of the stôre and was able to block a door, keeping the sus ect inside. Mattson heard the screams and came to Johnson's aid. The suspect was able to force the door open and, in the ensu- Ming strùggle, Mattson was stab- bdtwice. Allen an-d Beaulieu heard the commotion and helped the other two hold the man until police arrived. DALE BONIFACEAND JIMI ANDERSON - CLAREMONT On Aug. 27, 1988, Boniface, an ambulance attendant in Uxbridge, and Anderson, a tow truck driver, arrived at the soene of an accident in Uxbridge. The vehicle involved was in a pond and was totally submerged. Because it was thought there was another person in the vehi- dle, a police offlcer, Boniface and Anderson entered the water and searched the vehicle. They found it em pty. HOWARD DE GEER -BROCK TOWNSEHJP On Dec. 13, 1988, De Geer was walking out of a restaurant in Sunderl and when he saw a five- ton stake truck rolling back- wards down a street. The truck had no driver and was picking up speed as. it moved De Geer jumped on the run- ning board of the truck and reached in to- grab the steering wheel. After narrowly missing a lady etting into her car and a truck ~uîî'of-fuel, De Geer was able to brin hetruck to a o. SWAIN On Dec. 3, 1988, a car was southbound on Old Scugog Rd. when it went 'of the road, struck a tree, rolled over and caught fire. Ralph and Doug Swain, broth- ers, happened on the accident and were able to pull the uncon- scious driver from the vehicle. JAMES DIOTTE - OSHJAWA On March 5,' 1989, a variety store in north Oshawa was rob- bed at knife point by two maIes. Diotte became suspicious when he noticed one man enter the store while the other remained in an alleyway.
