The original. Oshawa chapter was some 30 years old when it meshed with the Don Valley chapter. "The main reason we want to bring it back to Durham is to sin g for.the community, to sinq a t hospitals and for seniors, fsays Carolyn Hayes, a member for the past eightyears. "The Don Výalley is too far away. It should be part of the community.» So far the Durham- group lias been meeting for, one year and lias a membersh i, of 20. "We could use 20 more, Psays Hayes. "Before we get our charter we must achieve a certain standard of music. "It gives you a lift, makes you feel good about yourself. It Ikind of gave me -L new lease on life after my hus- band died." The Sweet Adelines sing in four- part harmony. They sing anting from Dixieland anad religious music to all-time favorite musicals. The wives of Barbershopers initially started the Sweet Ade- lines some 4.4 years ago in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They chose the narne because 'Sweet Adeline' was a favorite song sung by barbershop quartets. Today it has an international membership (New Zealand, Aus- tralia, Japan, England, Scotland) of more than 33,000. The Oshawa group lias just acquired practice space at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Whitby.
