WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18,1989, PAGE 25 Bylaw on refreshment vehicles An amendment to Whitby's licensing bylaw has been appro- ved by council to better imple- ment regulations for refreshment vehicles. Council's action came about as a result of a general conern that the current regulations do not provide "adequate» controls of the many such vehicles operating in the town. There are currently five licensed chip trucks, 12 coffee trucks and six push carts or bicycles. The bylaw amendment calls for the motorized refreshment vehicles to be inspected annually by a. provincially authorized mechanic; and that those fitted with propane or natural gas be Rebate request denied By Trudie Zavadovics The Durham Board of Educa- tion may be wasting its time as it asks Durham Region for a rebate on the $200,000 bill for garbage collection in Durham schools. The Region waste committee last week dumped the responsi- bility right back into Metro's lap. Jack Massie, manager of custo- dial services with the school board, asked committee to help alleviate the escalating dumping fees. fDumping fees have gone from $16,e tone three years ago to $83, Hads le said that there were indications that rates were again on the rise. In 1986 the board paid $95,000 for garbage collection. The cost is now $200,000 and will rise to an estimated $300,000 next year, according to Massie. The Dur- ham board notes that Metro school boards receive free gar- bage disposal. But a report from works com- missioner Bill Twelvetrees states that an amendment is in the works, Bill 53, that will see user fees charged to Metro school boards. A report from the Durham Board of Education shows that, currently within Durham Region, there is a rebate of $28.36 per tonne for all residential garbage. However, the school board is classed as commercial and resi- dential, and receives no rebate. Region waste committee mem- bers pointed out that the Region Obituary HUGH R. MILLER Hugh R.
