OCTOBER 18, 1989 Eyton:e Canada must rise to -trade challenge By Kim Hawley Canada must rise to meet the challenge of world trade with an entrepreneural and innovative spirit. That was the message deli- vered by John Trevor Eyton, one of Canada's most notable busi- ness figures, at last week's meet- ing of the Oishawa Chamber of Commerce. And while the message was delivered to the more than 250 Chamber members and guests, it was also directed toward al Canadians. "On a proportional basis, we (Canada) are the world's top trading nation, with 30 per cent of our business volume devoted to international trade, reported Eyton, president and chief execu- tive officer of Brascan Ltd. Eyton also manages the Bronf- mans' $100-billion worth of North American assets and is a member of 24 boards of directors, including that of General Motors of Canada. We have to consider how Canada will repond to this." Supportina the .free-trqdp agreement between the United States and Canada, Eyton said, "It's there to secure and enhance trade in the U.S. market." Moving back to international trade, Eyton noted the business success of Japan, and the Euro- pean open nmarket. Refreshing memories of the ongoing growth of the Pacific Rim, Eyton said: "By the year 2000, the Pacific Rim will have 60 per cent of the world's population and will reç.resent 40 per cent of the wvorld's consumption. If we are to succeed in that market, we must stage a major campaign that will allow us to responcd to those challenges. Entpreneurial spirit, by Eyton's definition, means researching, developing and deli- vering unique products to the international market. Eyton caîls those companies and individuals who have deli- vered such unique products as "heroic Canadians. "In my view, we need more of them." .He added, "Japan spends more than any other country on research and development. They have more robots, more ever- thing." He continued by report- ing that Canada spends only an uncomparable 1.4 per cent of its dollars for research and develop- ment. To aid in Canada's success, Eyton said Canadian companies must concentrate on their strengtbs. "I think our mistake in the past bas been trying to do too much," be said. «We bave to pick out wbat we do best and focus on that,» he. told The Free Press after the luncheon meeting. Eyton also suggested that if Canadian businesses want to do business in other countries, they should be willing to be accommo- dating to those countries. TÈhe Lion- and the Unicorn, a traditional British pub and res- taurant in a century home at the corner of Coîborne and Green Sts., has undergone a major face- lift both inside and out. Co-owner Fred Wood concedes that the idea was sparked by a customer who frequents the establishment. Wood says the patron's idea drew interest from several residents and focal mer- chants who came forward to donate services and efforts. Co-owner Audrey KIos, who with Wood bought the restaurant earlier this year, says the project was in keeping with the town's efforts to restore the century-old beauty of the downtown core. KIos and Wood concentrated their efforts on completely rede- corating the interior of the Lion and the Unicorn, helping to create friendly atmosphere of an old British pub and restaurant. Cross Brother Tree Service tackled the job of removing the dying îvy fromn the outside walls. Polymar Paints--supplied the paints to re-do the building exterior. J.C.P Painting came through with the laborers to do the painting and to dlean and restore the brickwork. Now the Lion and the Unicorn looks better than ever, thanks t'O the help of neighbors who have taken pride in their town and who were wllling to extend a helpinghand. Thiere was no renovation per- formed on a another pub patron, the restaurant's ghost, which KIos and Wood affectionately cal "Martha." According to Wood, Martha does exist. "She moves things, like ash trayvsand g1lsses "says Wood. Whileaâmits Martba is mischievous, he says, «She's a mischievous, friendly ghost.» RECYCLING GLASS, CA NS, PLASTIC SOFT * 1 DRINK CONTAINERS AND NE WSPA PERS * CAN HELP REDUCE I PRESSURE ON j LANDFILL SITES AND INCINERA TORS, I AND CONSERVE 1 NA TURAL RESOURCES., a MM.« Imm ADDRESS CHANGE SHEWAN, RAPOPORT Barristers & Solicitors announce ncw law office address effective September 18, 1989 as PEARSON LANES 101 Mlary Street West (Bi3ock Street and Mary Street - 3rd Floor) Whitby, Ontario LIN 2R4 668-1712 (FAX) 668-4734 (Elevator Service L-Ind Ample Parking)
