FROM PAGE 1 The Whitby fire depa r t méiri responded te a caîl involving fire at two construction trailers at Lasco last October. It was four days later the departmient was informed the blaze involved pan- tentially da ngerous PCBs, the court heard. Platoon chief Ken, Corner told the court the fire department would have responded ta the fire with more caution had they been aware of the potenial danger of contamination. He indicated fewer firefighters would have initially approached the fire scene, and that they would have approached the fire from upwind. Corner also said firefighters would have worn special suits designed specifically for chemical fires, ta prevent any contamina- tion. Corner, who arrived on the scene of the fire after it was brought under contraI, returned the following day ta do a follow- up investigation with an Ontario fireimarshal. Corner said hie, too, would have taken special precautions during the investigation. Part of bis follow-up included the investigation of a ditch near the fire site which Corner descri- bed as being filled with a Iiquid - possibly water. "There was something floating on the water or liquid," Corner said, suggesting it appeared ta be an ail slick. Corner also teld the court that while studying the nearby tank, PROM PAGE)1 AND TANNING plus a restaurant bargaining table, under the from Whftby and office equipment, direction of mediator John inctuding 14 Sî1ender You toning Mather. beds, 2-tanni ng beds, 10 lockers, 'We're very pleased that we counters,1 stools, reception desk, ratified," Cherry says. 15 assorted desks, chairs, adding He. adds, "It wouldn't bave MC,C hcpirtvpewriters, surprised me;' if the contract s ot o oiert ..s, shrhuct'tbeen ratified last (Mon- 2 12 ft. freezers, dish washer, day) 'night, that the workers coolrcov:ye 6x1 wat-inwould have started striking this( coolr, onvyerpizza oven, Tuesday) marning. convctin oencoolers, toaster, "But the document was put to Coke M/C, coîd table, S.S. hood, bed.» fryer, miik M/C, 5 burner coffee Under the contract the wor- W/C, sinks, cory coffee grinder, kers will also receive a bonus. David id instryo Environment oýIhcer for oýrk - Durham region, was also called to the stand Friday. Bird told the court he also attended the fire-site at noon the next day to investigate the site., He, too, told the court of bis discovery of the tank with an "oil-like stain" around the tank and around the nearby ditch. Describing the tan k site, Bird said the valve at the bottom of the tank was fal4nd te, be leaking a liquid. A sampling of the leaking liquid was gathered by Bird ana tae for analysis at a Toronto lab. The fiïidings« indicated the sample had a PCB reading of 1,110 parts per million (pp'M), Bird told the court. He also told the court that the ministry con- siders any reading over 50,ppm hazardous. Subsequent ta the finding, fire- fighters who attended te fire were subjected to blood tests. However, the test resuits indica- ted no problems. (Exposuùre ta PCBs have been linkedtto health problems such as cancer). Although Lasco has a minis-* t-approved PCB sterage site at he Hopkins St. ,9., lato, the fire site was not in close pro- ximity te the aprroved storage area..
