Frec Press photo Anderson C.V.I. Mary Waterman On October 26, we had our Anderson's junior awards ceremony. Over 175 honor roll certificates were given to students from grade 9, 10, 11 and 12. Awards were given out to students who excelled in various subjects from mathematics to music. The junior band entertained parents, friends and students. It was a wonderful evenlflg. On Oct. 27 we held our graduation ceremony and uver 300 graduates received their diploma. There were 30 Ontario scholars. Stephanie Sears was given the Mayor's Medal for Citizenship and the Anderson Alumni Award. Many awards and bursaries were handed out to well, deserving students. Greg Dunn was valedictorian and did an excellent job. We all enjoyed the ACVI Band, conducted by J. t'Mannetje and Jazz Incorporated conducted by B. Foster was terrific. It was a memorable evening and we are all so proud of our graduates. Good luck on your future endeavors graduates. The students of Anderson are as busy as ever as the winter season draws near. Our cross country running team is off to OFSSA on Saturday. On behalf of the whole school I want to wish the team good luck, we will all be cheering for you. The swim team has started practising but new swimmers are still welcome to join. On Oct. 31 we held our first Spirit Day. The halls were not only -filed with ghosts and goblins but there were witches, jokers, hippies, a couple of cow girls, one toga (thank you Robyn Grant) and a beer can. Even our teachers got into the spirit with their great costumes. Our fundraiser ended successfully on Oct. 26 with prizes of a compact disk player, cordless phone and dinner for two to the winners. It is Penny Drive time once again at ACVI and our students are as eager as ever to raise money for our foster children and the United Way. This year will be a bit different as we are competing with Donevan to see who can raise the most money. With the selling of roses, pizza, pop, baked goods, candy floss and balloons I think the Anderson stuients will be champions of the Penny Drive. Who is Arron Timms and why is he student of the week? Arron Timms is a native of Toronto who came to us in 1988. Since he has come to Anderson he has taken an active part in our school, a member of the swim term. ASAA, and the cross country running team. But, this is not the reason he is student of the week. This grade 12 student received the highest mark in the school in a course. Arron got 100 per cent in grade 12 environmental science. This perfect mark is why AMohsSttideht;f thé Wek"'..................... selected By Trudie Zavadovics At a special meeting Oct. 30, the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate cehool Board recommended that the contract to build Whitby's newest Catho- lic elementary school, St. Mat- thew the Evangelist, be awarded to Bondfield Construction Limi- ted, the lowest of eight bidders for the job. The recommendation was sub- jec t to three conditions: that ndfield Construction reduce their bid of $4,928,000 by approximately five per cent; that the Ministry of Education approve the contract; and that a building pernit be obtained. The architects commenting on the bids, 'Apollonio Nightingale Quigley Makrimichalos Cugini, feel that the five per cent cost reduction can be achieved with- out major design changes. The school will be located on Willowbrook Dr. in the Brook- wood subdivision of Whitby, just north of the police station on Rossland Rd. Construction will begin in late November or early December. There are plans to have the school ready by the winter of 1991. Construction is going well for St. Bernard elementary school and Father Leo J. Austin high schools (French and English), the other Whitby separate schools now under construction. "St. Bernard is coming along very well," says Jerry O'Neill, controller of planning. "We expect to be in it by next Septem- ber. "Fr. Leo J. Austin is also com- ing along well. It's going to be tight but we're hoping to be in by the fall of 1990." Tanya Trinkaus Hi again! To start off, I would like to give you the results from Denis O'Connor's annual Halloween costume contest. The three winners were Melissa Littlejohn, Gary O'Brien and Ross Grasso. All three had very original costumes and deserve recognition. On Oct. 31, the running club was started. Anyone who enjoys running should consider coming out and joining this new group. It meets every Tuesday at 3 p.m. DO'C hosted LOSSA for both junior and senior boys' soccer on Nov. 1 and 2. Unfortunately, our junior team did not place high enough in the regular standings so it did not participate. Our senior boys' team defeated Paul Dwyer H.igh School by a score of 2-0 to win the LOSSA title for the third consecutive year. Today, the Woodworking Club starts for any craft enthusiast in Gr. 9 or 10. Interested Gr. 11, 12 or OAC students or staff members may go and join tomorrow. This week "Spectrum" begins operating again. It is a group of students working through chaplain Mrs. Fox's office and is in its second year. The members all have parents who are either separated or divorced and have worries about their lives because of that. By sharing their thoughts and expressing their concerns they are able to help and support each other. It can really be very helpful to show the students that they are not alone. Finally, Monday was the last day for Denis O'Connor's athletic council to sell citrus fruit for our school teams. The total amounts sold is not known yet, but thanks are in order for all those who supported our school teams by buying fruit. DO'C students will bring home mid-term reports on Thursday, Nov. 9 and parent/teacher interviews will take place on Wed., Nov. 15 (for parents with surnanes beginning A-L) and on Thurs., Nov. 16 (for parents with surnames beginning M-Z). Students will be bringing home an appointment sheet for parents to fIl in. Here at Austin, the year seems to be moving along quickly. And things get better every day. The last Austin dance was profitable, and many were in attendance. Numerous adventurous people were dressed in Halloween costume, and ail erdoyed themselves. We also had a costume day on Monday, Oct. 30, and prizes were given for the best costume. The Austin junior boys' soccer team is having a great season. They advanced to the LOSSA semi-finals and won against O'Neill in overtime on penalty shots. They won the gold ma and will meet Monsignor Pereyma at Civic Fields this week for the DYSSA championship. Our environmental action group is planning a school recycling campaign. Earlier this year they invited a guest er from Greenpeace to report on pollution, and they subsequentiy decided to make a difference in our community, starting with our own garbage. Watch for a blue box near you! Hello once again! To begin the article this week (justto get it out of the way quickly) I have decided to announce the ever dreaded mid-term test schedule. On Friday, Nov. 10, all students will write their period one test from 9 to 11 a.m. and their period two test from 1 to 3 p.m. On Mon., Nov. 13 periods 3 and 4 will be written from 9 to il a.m. and 1 ta 3 p.m., respectively. Now that that is out of the way I havt some good news for you to look forward to, as Friday, Nov. 17 is a P.D. day! University information presentations are continuing throughout Nove'mber. 'he next presentation is Tues., Nov. 14 at 9 a.m. presented by Carleton University. For more presentations listen for announcements and sign up in the guidance office for them. Good luck to the junior and midget boys' volleyball teams. Both teams are going to DYSSA this week. They each received a silver at LOSSA and I'm sure they are planning to do just as well, if not better, at DYSSA. Stay tuned for the results. To close this week's article, Id like to inform all senior students that the university application deadline is Dec. 15. Mrs. Stonkus will announce when the applications have arrived (it will be sometime in the week of Nov. 6). She·asks that all students start making the deciion about which three universities they will be applying to. Father Leo J. Austin Karen Achong Henry Street H.S. Kelly O'Hare
