Heard Dbl school ran to a fifth-place inish for mite girls at the Cana- dian cross country champion- ships in Etobicoke Nov. 5. She was com peting as a mem- ber of the Durham -X-L's team. The X-L's won first place overal in tyke boys, tyke girls and bantam boys was secon d in mite boys and girls, and third overal in bantam girls. Elyse Sorichetti, also from F.M. Heard, f»inished lOth among mite girls. Tyke girls saw Kristen Low of Pringle Creek corne in l6th place, while in tyke boys Christo- pher Coleby finished 31st. Hawks&&areq defeated in LOSSA Pickering edged Henry Hawks 19-13 in the LOSSA junior foot- ball final last week at Civic Fields. Henry had ousted O'Neill Red- men 18-6 in the LOSSA junior football semni-finals at Eastdale CVI. .Henry's points were racked up by Nathan Currier, Andrew Bur- ton and Steve Malanka. The outcome of the final game was decided in the closing minutes on a Pickering long pass. Pickering was undefeated dur- ing the regular season. Inthe first haîf Henry squan- dered scorin g opportunities in Pickering's half of the field. "Our team proved a lot in the last few games and our 3-3-1 record doesn't really explain how good we were, but we were better than our record states, especially in the last couple of games," said coach Dan McCluskey. Twenty-six coaches from Dur- ham and surrounding regions received instruction from Wai- ters, who has coached the Cana- dian '84 Olympic and ý'86 World Cup teams. H-e showed coaches how to teach soccer skills to:ahl ages of boys and gîrlsl in a way they'Il enjoy and underètand. The Pickering 14-ye4r-old rep team and coaches wýere also among those, on bandi to absorb some of Waiters'expertise in bahl control,'-passing -and defensive positioning.,* Waiters is the author of books for différent age groups and vari- ous levels of-soccer. Whitby got by Oshawa Turul 4-2 on Oct. 31 and then tied Guildwood 6-6 on Nov. 7. Jamie Newell, Armando Sub- rizzi and Christopher Finnie have helped to improve sceoring, while netminders Jamie Nisbet and Finnie have combined in net to reduce *goals against. The club emphasizes important concepts of skcill -development, sportmanship, equal play, folowing of rules, friendsbp and enjoyment of the game ini their house league aictivities, as opposed te the mere idea of wnlng. The club alo featured a coacbing dlinic on the first Saturday. Zoltan Baranyi, an ex-professional soccer play and coach, provided coaching skxlls for house league coanches and parents. Baranyi stressed the need that parent coaches should learn soccer sIlls by learning as students of soccer themselves. Participants of the free clinie were poided with a boolet of helpfulsocer drills for new coanches to use in their house league activities.
