Newcastle Mayor Marie Hub- bard said that town staff and fire offliciais are stili talking with Ontario Hydro to finalize the on-site fire plans so they meet Newcastie's approval and adv- ised council to do what it thought best under the circumstances. They downIoaded (expenses to the Region) to $26,400, and they backed down on the police vote and tbe marina issue. I think we're being had as a region. They haven't responded appropriately to this Region. Public safety is what I'm here to represent.» Another factor under conside- ration was tbe Province's failure to fund equipment and the train- ing needed for tbe Darlington and Pickering nuclear emergency plans. "I think we sbould go along with this," said regional chair- man Gary Herrema. "I bave a lot of problems saying there is no emergency exercise because of a funding fight with the Province. Our number one priority is safety. We should make a fxight but accept tbe money." The funding fiîgbt refers to the Region's application for funding under the federal joint emer- g ency preparedness program (JEPP) wbich enables updating of tbe Pickering nuclear emer- gency plan and the Durbam pea- cetime plan; exercise of the Dar- lington nuclear emergency plan; staff training; purchase of -a fax machine for the operations room at Whitby police station; and the purchase of emergenc regist- ration kits for the social services 'Q department for evacuation pur- poses. In 1989, the Region requested $39,500 i JEPP funding but now hopes to get $2 1,600.
