A decline in the con- sumption of foods high in fibre is now thought to play a role in the develop- ment of colon cancer, diverticular dis- ease, obesity, varicose veins, hemor- rhoids, galîstones, diabetes, and hiatus hernia. In addition, fibre has a special role in the elimination of toxic sub- stances from the body." Perhaps the greatest advantage of fibre consumption is that it can havç almost immediate effects for better health. Unfortunately, while many consumners have reali>ed the benefits that fibre can offer, others remain un- aware of these benefits until personal health problems become serious. Dr. Scala writes, "You can opt for a fibre supplemnent and choose to leamn to cook with old-fashioned grains, beans, and produce- but don 't procrastinate. The health problems brought on by lack of fibre in the diet build up over the years and tend to strike in old age when we're most vuinerable. The sad thing is that s0 many of these problems could be avoided entirely or lessened. "In the general population, there are no significant changes in the use of alcohol, sleeping pis, stimulants, tranquilizers, cannabis and cocaine over the last two years," says Dr. Reg Smart, head of Prevention Studies at the ARF, who conducted the survey with scientist Ed Adlaf. However, there wete changes within a few subgroups of the population: daily drinIng decined among 18- to 29-year olda and among professionals and managers; tranquilizer use increased among 18- to 29-year old women, cannabis use increased among residents of Northern Ontario and among the unemployed. "At first glance the study resuits may seem to contradict recent reports of dramatic increases in drug use," say the authors. "However, in this survey we attempt to show the broad picture of drug use in Ontario. Certain communities or neighborhoods nlay be experiencing increasing drug problenis which are not fully reflected in a broad survey." The study shows a number of long-term trends in aduit drug use since 1977: daily drinking declinded among the total population; binge drinking - five or more drinks at a single sitting - increased among men over 50; use of cannabis increased among 30- to 49-year old mn "The most perplexing Iong-term trend is the increase in drug use by young women. The survey shows that the use of sleeping pilîs, stimulants, tranquilziers, and cannabis increased among 18- to 29-year old women. Binge drinking also increased among young women. We looked at a number of factors in trying to explain this trend. However, an analysis of the data show that drug use among young women increased regardless Of employment status occupation or marital status. Further reports will examine this trend in greater detail,"' say the authors.
