However you phrase it.. to lose weight, to get fit, to develop endurance, to feel god. .. it al bols down to, "I want to develop healthy habits, but how?" The first step is to seek out. an accredited fitness apprai-sal- centre. In 1982, the Canadian Association of i.Sport Sciences (CASS) developed a national prograin of ,iness appraisal certification and accreditation. The FACA (Fitness Appraisal Certification and Accreditation) prograin was designed to provide users of fitness services with reliable and ; safe fitness appraisals; to establish standards of conipetence for individuals adininistering fitness appraisals; and, to institute and maintain standards of practice for fitness appraisal centres. To know if your fitness facility is one of the 53 aècredited centres in Ontario, look for this decal on their literature or fitness room door. Secondly, ask what- qualifications their fitness staff have. A Standardized Test of Fitness Appaiser (TA (forznerly RFA: Registered Fitness Appraisal) is trained to administer the Canadian standardized test of fitness. This assessment provides healthy individuals with a general indication of their fitness level compared to other Canadians of the same age and sex. A certified fitness appraiser (CFA) is qualified to administer a more extensive fitness appraisal. It is recommended that anyone who bas been inactive be tested by a CFA, as well as consult with a physician, prior to beginning an activity programn. As we enter a new decade, futurists predict that individuals will take more personal responsibility for their well-being, and aIl segments of the population will demand equal access. FACA wil play an integral role in this developuient because it can provide a wide delivery system between provinces and between allied healthy professionals. OFAs and STFAs interact with thousands of Canadians on a dlybasis and can hence distribute- - accurate and state-of-the-art information to a hungry public. Consumers can be a catalyst in the' growth of fitness professionalism. Insist that your fitness facility hire only qualified staff so that your needs are meet. Accredited centres in the Durhamn Region are the Ajax Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Clinic, Ajax Community Centre, Centennial Rond, Ajax, 427.2875;- and Pickering Recreation Complex, 1867 Valley Farm Rond, Pickering, 831-1711, 6à'3-6582. Olga Labai is the ldnesiô1ogist/1tiýiess supervisor with the Town of Pickerig department of community services and facilities, and an active member of the Durham Region Fitness Coundll. names, of the pêople Who, worked so hard to get the league started and nurtured it into1 the fine oDganization it becanie. Then there were those wond rful1 local sponsors like Frank McÇ.ýlamnond of Osiawa Discount! House, Dearbotn Sheli, Beauj$re Esso, Cardinal Cleaners, Hambly Block, North American Steel, Lasco Steel, Sinclair Sunoco, Branton Home Builders and so many, many more over the years. Thank you aIl wherever you are. At one point, after Garrard Rond was absorbed 4-.to the Whitby league, some- of the trophies and p laques Of recognition won by Garrard Rond were on display in the Iroquois Arena and in the Luther Vipond MemoÛrial Arena in Brooklin. I hope they are stili on display. Many happy hours were spent in Willow Park by parents and' theîr childre'n at gaines in this organization. When the naine Garrar Rond is deleted from the Whitby Garrard Rond Minor LaCroýse Association, let those wvho aýe continuing on know what Garrard RZond neant and what the naine stood for* - a rural community sitting between a town and a city, a community that built a lacrosse club that became known country-wide.
