For the first time, the skill of the arraét nase eeii put to use in the technological environient of the neonatal intensive care ward. Heather Spears bas opened a door hitherto closed to all but some health professionals and parents. Her work allows the viewer to discover a poignant beauty within an otherwise harsh reality. The drawings were executed over a period of three years in Copenhagen hospital. With the permission of the hospital authorities and parents, Spears drew newly born babies hospitalized because they were ill, premature, or 6nder observation. "Before long, I found beauty even in deformity, and even in tubes and other surgical equipment. I made copies and gave them to the parents. In one or two difficult cases the hôspital used me as a go-between with the parents," said Spears. Heather Spears achieves her three-dimensional effects with line and smudging. Although she recorded her spontaneous reactions in a short time, her empathy for her subjects is almost tactile. Heather Spears has brought out the beauty of these new lives. In 1986, a book titled 'Drawings from the Newborn' published by Ben- Simon Publications, Vancouver featured not ony Spear's work but also her poems. A graduate of the. Vancouver School of Art, Heather Spears has. lived in Demnark. for more than twenty 'years. She teaches drawing and is a staff artist for the Copenhagen newspaper Politiken.
